TBH I don't know anything about Peoria except they used to have a Jumer's there (maybe they still do?) So I don't know if that's a "sketchy" neighborhood or not. And recently it seems in many of our cities it's not enough to avoid "sketchy" neighborhoods any more.

I may be a late reply but if your looking for more youngsters you’ll probably find that in Champaign and maybe Bloomington/ Normal.. but I would pick Peoria Area over Bloomington any day, their is way more geography going on in Peoria and you’ll find it’s more diverse here too. Champaign may have the benefits of being the college town and attracting some more interesting businesses... Peoria has the largest population in central illinois and as it grows it will attract more businesses, east Peoria is currently the retail giant that downtown Peoria used to have but you’ll find shopping centers scattered all over the area and the east side of the river is a lot less dense composed with a couple main roads and you’ll find communities like Washington, Morton and metamora that carry a small town feel but very close to a urban area. It’s also very cheap to live in Peoria compared to Champaign. CU may have more going for it when it comes to big sports teams but Peoria doesn’t lack much behind CU and you’ll find lots of outdoor activities in Peoria especially if your into hiking which Peoria has some of the best hiking trails in the state with gems scattered all over the area.
