Fwiw, I've commented on many other state/city forums as well (as is applicable). I never hear so many "winers" on those forums.
Oh I'm all for talking about Illinois, that comment was more aimed at people saying you aren't allowed to discuss anything Illinois the nanosecond you don't live here.

Oh I know, I was confiding in you. I support those sentiments.

The only people who have no right to discuss the atrocious state of government in Illinois are the people who can't be bothered to vote, or vote completely uninformed. A government that serves itself first and causes its own citizens to flee the state to get away from it is an affront to all Americans.

Clueless and ignorant career welfare recipients who can vote and are blind to how they are being lied to and used have doomed the state. Sadly, they breed like cockroaches and their growing numbers are discouraging to people who don't bother to vote because they feel it would be a waste of time.

I joined this forum to add my 2 cents. I have lived and worked (and voted) in the Springfield ILL-annoy area my entire life. I recently retired and have already purchased property in the Missouri Ozark region (where family members, friends, ex-coworkers have resided for many years, or have recently moved to to escape Il.). After winter passes, everything i no longer want or need will be sold or donated.. and once the property (just outside of Springfield) is sold off, I will leave this state for good. That will likely be within the next few months

Why???..taxes and the over-governing state government, of course.

I have put off buying a new car for 4 years because i refuse to provide more tax revenue to Il.. I understand that my pension will be taxed by Missouri, but that is a small consolation to me considering that the annual property tax bill for the 5 year old home sitting on over 15 acres in Missouri is $440.
A former coworker and his wife are currently paying $1000 A MONTH...yes, per month property tax...to live near Chatham Il.. I was paying $220 month for property tax on a home in Springfield. Screw that. I was so happy to have sold it. Closed on it a year ago.
Just a week ago the price of diesel fuel at a station in Mo. was at the $3.35 level (still way overpriced), across the river it was $3.79.
The entitlement attitude, bitterness, and rudeness of a lot of Springfield residents is another of many good reasons to leave.

My brother will retire in about 4 months and leave for Missouri as well.

A 5 year old home on 15 acres and only $400 a year property tax? Must be a trailer.

Nope. It's a house. I don't and won't do trailers.

Just before i retired last year a coworker and i were looking through property listings during our break. He was looking at a listing for a nice ranch home in a suburb somewhere in Alabama. It was listed at $229K if i remember correctly...the annual taxes...are you seated??...$90. no lie. I wish i had saved that listing.

Missouri is cheap because it is nearly entirely economically moribund in most rural areas of the state. It also is in the middle of Tornado Alley that has shifted eastward from the Great Plains over time. Throw in the horrid heat, humidity, ticks, and people that are never prepared for any winter/poorly maintained roads- no thanks. There are many reasons why taxes are very low in Missouri, you mostly get what you pay for there...
I prefer the Northwoods any day of the week, even if I have to pay more in yearly property taxes if I were to retire there.

To each their own. Glad that cold snowy climate appeals to you. I love heat and humidity...Not all parts of Missouri are as bad as you may have heard or assumed. But as in ALL states, there are good and not so good areas to live. I have been looking for retirement property for over 3 years and saw many listings that fit the description that you assume fits all southern Mo. property...i passed on them, of course. This retirement property is located in well maintained area, and it borders federal park land. Yearly taxes for a similar piece of property Sangamon County Il. would likely be in the $7-8K range..wouldn't doubt if it were more.

It's funny because we were visiting my in-laws for Christmas and my wife's uncle & aunt (who live in Iowa) showed up as well. We got into talking about gas prices and they told us they always stop for gas at the border of Iowa and don't fill up again till they get back into Iowa (unless they absolutely have to). I told them we do the exact same thing at the border of Indiana.

Along the lines of property (and other) taxes, I often hear from Illinois residents that their taxes are worth it because they're getting better in-state amenities because of them. Then my thought is always, "ok, so are your amenities getting better each year as your taxes rise and rise and rise on an annual basis?". If so, then it would seem that the taxes are worth it. However, if they're remaining the same then it seems like you're just paying more money for the same old benefits.
