I have to get new Illinois plates and I don’t really like the new plates. I have a SUV, and I like the cleaner design of the B Truck plates. Looking at the rules for B Trucks, it seems I should be able to get one without any issue. Or can I?

None of the other vanity or custom plates I like as well, so I was wondering if any of you have tried to get B plates with a normal SUV or truck?

Thanks.

Unless you want the possible hassle, I would never get B plates, especially if in the Chicagoland area.

No idea on the B plates, but you're not alone in your opinion. The new plates are downright ugly. They look too busy.

I can't stand the new plates either... they drive me nuts. Way too busy. I love classic/simple license plates that don't catch eyes. The Texas black/white plates are great, as is the New York plate though the yellow is a little bold, it's a really simple look.

How can we can get Illinois to revamp their standard plates?

Anyway: I put B truck plates on my wife's SUV (an Acura). Had no issues with registration and no issues with police/tolls etc.

I still have the old IL plates on my car, and my 3rd car has the white sox plates, which are a cool look. I think the U of I plates are pretty discreet as well.

Agreed, and thanks for the response! Yes, I loved the previous plates they were so iconic. Between NY's stoic and California's classic I thought Illinois with Lincoln in the middle was pretty much perfect. And now these, yuck. Black non bold font on light blue background? Come on.

I'm going to go with the B plates as you did, since you haven't had any trouble. The white on blue basic is just fine.

For one, truck plates are restricted from driving or parking on any Boulevard in Chicago, including Lake Shore Drive. You can put any specialty plate on a truck under 8k pounds so I'd recommend going that route.

None of the specialty plates are appealing to you?

The Environmental ones do....I'm a sucker for the cursive Illinois script, so that's where the conundrum comes in...lol

My wife does real estate and parks all over the city. I highly doubt any meter maid knows that Boulevard rule, if true, and I cannont find a source for that. Even then... how many boulevards are there in Chicago? Parking on LSD... who does that??

Drive down Harlem, Ashland, or Central at night north of Belmont and see how many B trucks are street parked.
