For those more familiar with Illinois - how would you rank these three cities by overall influence? Consider history, economy, politics, specialty. They all seem pretty close to each other, so I need the input of native Illinoisans.

Feel free to vote in the poll and discuss.

Also: I will just leave this here: 2010 US Census Urban Area Population:

Rockford - 296,863 (does not include Beloit, WI which is 63,835)
Peoria - 266,921
Springfield - 161,316

Edit: sorry poll omitted 3 from the first choice - #3 Springfield

Edit again: I think they are all very close in overall stature despite their population differences. I honestly have no idea in what order they belong, seems like they are all pretty close to each other. Votes, opinions, and discussion are greatly appreciated!

Interesting one. I'd say Rockford is probably last. I'll give Springfield the edge for #1 just because the government jobs should give it a bit more stability heading into the future and the Lincoln association is fairly well known.

Interesting take.

Champaign, IL could have been included in this poll too. Though that would increase the number of options from 6 to 24, I think... at any rate.

Gave Peoria the edge to Rockford because of Caterpillar. Is anything in Rockford anymore?

I give Springfield the edge due to the city being the state capital and Abraham Lincoln attractions.

Rockford would be in the second place due to its close proximity to Chicago and known for high crime and decay.

Lastly, I have heard of Peoria but I do not know anything about it.

Rating Springfield #1 due to state capitol & state government departments. You have 4 Lincoln sites from Library & Museum, his home, the tomb. Nearby New Salem.

Potential someday of higher speed Amtrak from Chicago to St Louis.

Because of State Farm may rate Bloomington over Peoria & over Rockford.

1) Springfield due to being the state capital, state government departments, and Abraham Lincoln attractions
2) Peoria due to Caterpillar and State Farm in Bloomington nearby
3) Rockford - What is there now other than urban decay and high crime we all have been hearing about?

Caterpillar HQ is no longer in Peoria. It moved out to Deerfield several years ago and now out of state entirely to Texas. There still is a good deal of CAT manufacturing in the area though.
