I am doing my family's geneology. I was born in Cairo Il in St Mary's hospital, Is it still in operation?

My mother was born and lived in Cairo until her marriage. Her father died in 1928 while helping with the construction of the Cairo traffic bridge. Mother was only four years old when her father died.

At that time, they lived at 324 23rd Street. My mother's grandparents lived nearby at 222 32nd Street. I would like to know what is on those locations now, and if maybe the houses are still there.

Thanks,
Grandma Sandy

St. Mary's is long abandoned, just like most of Cairo.

I hate to burst your bubble but Cairo, IL is one of the worst cities in America. It is absolutely depressing. It's on par with East St. Louis but there are not as many shootings since everyone's already been shot! A very bad place.

Cairo IL is a post apocalyptic no man's land.

If you have a desire to see what it's like Google Street View covers a lot of the town including block after block of empty buildings.

Google Maps

Yeah, Cairo is actually a city that's studied a lot in the United States. It's dropped from almost 16,000 people back in the 1940's to 1950 to around 3,000 people today.

Unfortunately the city dealt with very extreme race issues and a general decline. As a result, today the city is largely abandoned and quiet. The school district has one of the highest ratio of students below the poverty level - almost 2 out of every 3.

St. Mary's hospital is an empty shell. The original building was replaced with a more modern structure in the 50's and was abandoned around 1986. The building is still there, but the parkinglot is overgrown and all the windows are broken out.

Was just in Cairo. What a shame that this once beautiful little town is now a shambles. Everything is either burned down (downtown) or boarded up. No one on the streets. We drove down all the residential sections and saw only one man outside. Had no knowledge of the town history, but it is sad, sad, sad.
