The Governor proposed cutting 2 of the 3 Amtrak trains that serve downstate Illinois, leaving us with only a single train. Of course, Chicago's service remains untouched. I realize that more people probably use the Amtrak in Chicago, but it always seems like downstaters suffer. What a ridiculous thing to cut during the fuel crisis...

Maybe they can push southern IL completely back into the 19th century. No trains or airline service, and $4 gas. Might as well live on a remote island somewhere.

Good grief, Illinois never changes. They won't cut Amtrak service in downstate Illinois. They just threaten to as the opening act to a tax increase. Just watch, in 2009 there will be a temporary income tax increase to 3-1/2% or 4% that will be made permanent after the 2010 Governor election.

Think IL is out of control? In 1968 when Richard Ogilvie became Governor the Il state sales tax was 4.75% and there was no state income tax.

Shame on Illinoians for re-electing this loose cannon.
Let's hope for decent choices next time around and a cold prison cell for Blago.

I can see why he gets re-elected. He gives Chicago everything its people want and makes everyone else suffer budget cuts and reduced amenities. Even if all the non-Chicagoans voted against Blago, we would still be outnumbered. It's just a lost cause.

Personally, I think he has screwed the entire state without playing regional favorites.

The article states that 5 trains would be eliminated, ALL of them service Chicago, appears Chicago is the hardest hit city in the state...

Yeah, I wonder if the OP actually read the article or just saw Mattoon and went into a hissy.

Is there not a fairly large University in Macomb called Western Illinois?

How could they eliminate all service to Macomb?

Does Blago have stock in huge oil companies?

Cuts would affect people all over the state not just Southern Illinois (http://www.southernillinoisan.com/articles/2008/06/25/front_page/24910014.txt - broken link)

STLtoday - Blagojevich in full-court press to get new funding (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/illinoisnews/story/28AC8E45DA5CB6D78625747400114E07?OpenDocument - broken link)

"Eliminated completely would be service including Quincy and Macomb in western Illinois, he said."

They always threaten to cut service to Quincy (that's where I'm from) and never have, they actually added a second train a few years ago. Let's hope that doesn't happen (this is also the train that goes through Macomb and Western)
