Hello!

I do have questions about Galena...I was wondering if you can answer some of them?!!

My husband and I are in CA due to the military, but he is getting out next year. We think Galena looks beautiful and would like to make it home. We are both orginally from the midwest and love the distinction of the four seasons.

So my questions, I know that Galena is touristy, which is okay, but I would like to relax at my home and take a walk without lots of busy roads and cars speeding through. What part of Galena is the best to have quiet peaceful living? What is the Galena territory like? How is the morning commute to Dubuque? Would you live in Dubuque? Do you know anything about jobs in the Dubuque area? (husband-computers, I'm a teacher)

Really I would love any and all of the info you could give me. Thanks so much!

There are not really any busy roads in Galena, except Rt. 20, which is hardly busy. My favorite neighborhoods are the ones up on the hill behind downtown (west side of downtown). Lots of beautiful homes up there, great views of the valley below, seems ultra quiet. As for jobs and commute in Dubuque, Im unsure, Ive only visited there once, didnt really thrill me at all.

Glad to hear some honest info from people who actually live (not just visit) Galena. We are thinking of getting out of chicagoland when we retire, so it is an option for us.
We rented a cottage in eagle ridge one time - got a whole bunch of people together. However, we were being told that galena had put some kind of limit on how many people could be in one of these big rental home units. This house was huge - like 6 bedrooms or something. Easily would fit 12 people but I thought the limit was like 8 people or something like that.
Maybe that is putting a damper on things up there.
As for my opinion on door county, we have visited there several times. Camping, I have visited there my last time however. The last time we went, we felt very out of place with all the mega-thousand dollar range rovers and mercedes running around. Definitely a playland for the ultra-rich. Felt VERY out of place.
Someone told me I would prefer the lake side though as it is quieter and not as glamorous - instead of the bayside.
For the record though - I didn't think Johnson's was that great.

The drive from Galena to Dubuque is about 15 minutes, maybe 20. I've been to Dubuque a number of times, and I too was not terribly impressed. Nothing wrong with the place, exactly; nice and tidy and seems quiet and all... but nothing begged me to come back and visit again. Dan Kaercher, editor-in-chief of Midwest Living Magazine, calls Dubuque "my favorite river town anywhere" so I guess it does something for some folks.

But I do admit the scenery along the river is gorgeous, maybe that Dubuque's little claim-to-fame?
