I went there too, the area around the school is extremely boring, and ugly, VERY much unlike the rest of Chicago. If you want somewhere more lively and fun, you will have to do a long commute (but with little traffic). Somewhere like Evanston (college town-30 minute drive- 20 miles) is great, or Highland park (closer but quieter and more residential). These woudl be the areas I suggest for what you may want. Both are fairly pricey, but you could find some good deals if you look hard. But, if you are going to be a med student, you will be studying most of the time anyway. Downtown Chicago is probably an hour drive/ train ride. We woudl go downtown any chance we got on the weekends...good luck

I think you will find Gurnee very affordable compared to S. Fla. I live here and certainly do not think it is ugly or boring. There are lots of restaurants and clubs, some lovely parks, great bike trails and the weather in Summer is glorious. You might find Grayslake or Libertyville a good bit cozier in the way of old-fashioned downtown ambience.
I would not recommend Evanston. It is very expensive and you would soon tire of the commute. The university is not near the train station and the bus service is terrible.
Waukegan, just north of North Chicago on Green Bay Road has some very decent modern apartment complexes, very reasonably priced. Driving a car is not a problem up here; nearly everyplace has a free parking lot attached and the traffic moves quite smoothly.
