If you're willing to give up air travel, flying to Chicago on an early morning flight and connecting to Carbondale on Amtrak's Illini (leaves at 4:15 pm) or the long-distance City of New Orleans (which leaves Chicago at 8pm and uses comfortable Superliner cars) are great. I have done the ride there and back on the City of New Orleans.

The travel time is just under 5 and a half hours. Message me for more details.
