I love it here in Cherry Valley... FAR from the ghetto west side of Rockford, beautiful community, low crime, low taxes, established, but growing area......

I was born and raised in Rockford and I hate it here with a passion being an african american I have to go out of town to Chicago,Detroit, and Saint Louis to find entertainment for my type of crowd. Rockford is starting to get over crowded with Chicagioians and it's not chicago's elite of people the people that are coming here are poverty stricken and are ignorant people moving from Chicago's projects to Rockford's projects. Dont get me wrong not all of Rockford is bad if you are going to move here I suggest the upper East side or out by perryville road and to say the least im moving to Dallas in march and im surley counting down the days and CANT WAIT to get out of this HELL HOLE!!!

Should I or shouldn't I? I am considering a move to Rockford with a child entering kindergarten. Right now I need affordability, obviously that can be found in Rockford. Found a place (rental) in an historic district (I believe) near Rockton Ave/Auburn St. I realize this is "the west side." But does anybody know specifically about that pocket?? I don't want to live in fear. I don't want to worry about our safety and simply trying to exist. I don't want to overreact either. The move is temporary--6 months, to a year, tops. Any suggestions or thoughts? Knowledge on that specific area?

Help me, please!
NOOOOOOOO DONT NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT MOVE OFF, BY OR ON AUBURN STREET

I lived in Rockford from 2007-2009, graduated from East High in 2008 and couldn't have been more happy to get out. There were only 100 people in my graduating class, yet there were 400 incoming freshman that year. Every public school in the city is messed up thanks to a lawsuit that forced the city to separate the west side kids and bus them into every school. Parents are scared to send their kids to public schools now and most of those that can afford sent their kids to private schools.

The city is also depressing looking, so many areas are underdeveloped. If you've ever been through Gary, Indiana, it's almost that bad. Even the middle-class neighborhoods look terrible because the city is giving tax breaks to minorities coming in from Chicago and they're not taking care of the neighborhoods.

There's essentially nothing productive for teenagers to do in the city. I was bored out of my mind during my time there. I spent a lot of my time furthering my own personal education and waiting to get out of there. I wasn't getting a decent education in school because teachers spent half their time trying to control the bad kids in class instead of actually teaching.

I wouldn't advise anyone to move their unless it's for a job and that job allows you to afford to live in one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city. And that's if you're single. If you have kids, I wouldn't suggest moving to Rockford at all.

Rockford is only number 9:

The Most Dangerous Cities In America - 24/7 Wall St.

Of course, this was before the recent 7 murders in 2 weeks. Maybe it will move up in the rankings.

Correction: News Flash!!! Make that 8 in 2 weeks....dude got popped in the face:

Rockford Police Investigate City's 8th Murder in 2 Weeks

What a place, lady took a bullet attending a graduation party last weekend. If you like the ghetto and combat environment then Rockford is the place for you. Number one in crime, unemployment and child poverty. City and county management who don't have a clue.............

Hate to say it, but bad. I've lived here about five years, and in that time I have been carjacked at gunpoint and had a car broken into right in front of my house. We live on the far south east side of Rockford. The streets are a mess, crime and drugs are everywhere. This town has seen better days literally 50 years ago. There are a lot of great people here, but the job market is terrible and most local pay is pretty lousy. Shopping and restaurants are pretty good, but often things close because they just can't make it.

I just can't recommend this area. We are going to leave as soon as possible. We try to enjoy everyday for now knowing that we will not be here for the rest of our lives.

I wouldn't recommend moving here... i've lived here for 16 years (my entire life), and i'm getting the heck out in 2 years when i go to college. Rockford neither has the perks of a small or large town. Basically, we're really unsafe with nothing to do. Not to mention our horrible school systems that are just getting worse (which is why families shouldn't move here) or the lack of nightlife/ways to meet new people (which is why single people shouldn't come here) Unless you have a GREAT job lined up (most of the good jobs are at sundstrand... which is why my family is here) i would say not to even come near this town. Go to Chicago or something. Or even Wisconsin is way better. Just don't come here.
