For a young and single professional? Are there enough cultural and artistic activities in the area? Are most of the social activities centered around the Univ of Illiois?

Also, which area around the city has better air quality and is more interesting to live (in terms of culture and art)?

Thanks a lot.

Drinking at different bars is the culture and art. Also see article. Urbana Contemporary Art (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090227/ap_on_fe_st/odd_placentas_in_sewer - broken link)

Illinois is a farm state. According to a friend who is licensed by the sate to test for mold, the #2 killer in IL is mold. If air quality is an issue, keep doors and windows closed. Buy a quality air filter for your furnace and change it every two weeks. You will have clear air at home, breathe better and sleep better. My spouse has a double lunng disease and I've been doing this every two weeks for nearly four years.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll remember that.

What are the other health hazards in IL? The life expectancy of IL is rather low compared to some other states such as Iowa, why is that?

Because Iowa doesn't have a giant city with a large, seething underclass like Illinois does.

Nor does it have a giant city that is hell bent on taxing people to death.

I was once a young and single professional in Champaign. My experience is from many years ago. There are lots of cultural activities there, with Krannert Center for the Performing Arts (U of I), community theater, etc. A lot of the social scene is centered around the U of I. I don't think there's much difference in air quality or anything else between the two cities. It's not a large town.

If you are really concerned about air quality, I can tell you that a lot of people complain about the Kraft plant (at I 74/I 57 junction) and to a lesser extent, the south farms (directly south of the University). If you don't want to smell them, you might consider not living downwind from them.

As far as I can tell, you have to live pretty much on top of the Kraft plant to smell it. My MIL lives less than a mile away from it and I've never smelled it while at her place.
