I'm in no position to even think about buying a home for the next..15 or 20 years. I would love to have some acreage where you could have a garden and maybe be able to shoot a gun...I have looked at houses for rent in illinois and none have acreage at all. Although I have only looked online, so maybe that makes the difference? Anyways, I'm looking for somewhere to rent in southern illinois within 45 mins or so of carbondale that might have some acreage. 3 bedrooms also.

If there is no where to rent with some acreage, then are there any places that might have their backyard flow into Shawnee National Forest or somewhere along those lines?

thank you!

You need to obtain some of the local advertiser type papers that are published weekly. Many small town landlords do not publish in big newspapers that have an on-line presence. Contact the local town mayor offices to get the phone numbers or addresses of such.

Oh ok, thanks alot. I didn't really think of that too much. So there are some houses for rent that actually have some acreage?

Barrington is not only not in Southern Illinois, near Carbondale, but I don't think that the OP could afford (not meant in a bad way) to rent 5-10 acres in Barrington and certainly would not be allowed to shoot a gun or two in that area. I had an uncle that lived on 5 acres on a lake in North Barrington in the 60's-80's. Property sold for over $3 million and the new owner bulldozed the beautiful 6000sf house!

Look for farm houses to rent. You probably won't get much more land than where the house and outbuildings sit, but you should have plenty of space for a decent garden.

thanks for the input. Yeah, I checked out Barrington. It's way to expensive for me. It seems like once you get down near the carbondale/carterville area the prices just drop so much more.
