Hi there,
My husband is looking for opening a manufacturing factory in Chicago area, probably Rockford. After doing a lot reading here, I'm not sure about where to live in this area. Please give me some suggestions. We can live near Rockford maybe a commute of 30 to an hour would be okay. We would prefer a safe place with good school system. We have 2 little girls age 3 and 1. We use to live in Valparaiso, IN. Thanks a lot!!!

Rockford's an old industrial town, with some of the worst unemployment in Illinois, so I'm sure a factory would be very welcomed.

As far as living, the schools in Rockford don't have the best reputation. I think living in Harvard, Woodstock or Beloit (Wisconsin) would probably be reasonable choices. If you live in Harvard, then you're close to a metra line for times you may want to take the train into downtown Chicago, too.

Check out the string of suburbs between Rockford and Beloit (Loves Park, Machesney Park, Roscoe, Rockton, and South Beloit). A majority of these towns have a nice school system (better reputation than Rockford District 205). Also, just west of Rockford is the small town of Winnebago and south of Rockford is Byron. I don't know too much about those school systems, but they are semi-rural/suburban.

Rockford schools are bad, most people who can afford to, send their kids to private schools. Also, property taxes in Rockford are very high relatively speaking.

If you must live in rockford I would avoid anything west of the river. I have 2 small kids and cannot send them to the rockford public schools so have to pay for private schools. I would look up in roscoe rockton area or the byron area. anything in rockford school district 205 is horrible. Certain areas of Loves park and Machesney park can be nice.

I would recommend Belvidere.
