I have heard the term used to describe Indiana, from time to time. I have read occasionally online and off but have never heard a straight answer .Ditto in conversations off line .I have never thought until now to ponder the answer. So my question is why ?

People need something to dump on to make themselves feel better.

I've heard the term "backwards" used to characterize I dunno, about 80% of the states at one point or another. One thing I do know is that the people who make such sweeping characterizations of a state tend to be backwards themselves. Notre Dame. IU. Purdue. Enough said.

1.) Indiana was a hotbed for the KKK and its one of the birthplaces to a KKK chapter. 2.) Indiana is a red state

This was brought up by someone from Minnesota, of course, suggesting that things happening in 1920 are somehow relevant today is silly; especially considering Indiana went after those Klan boneheads.

Indiana also prosecuted the leader of the Indiana KKK in 1925, and other members of the KKK. It is not as though the KKK ran the state, or has any significant presense today. Michigan has had more recent incidents involving the KKK than Indiana does. Should we now declare Michigan as a racist place?

And regarding the video, if you look hard enough, you can find boneheads posting videos from every state. You don't honestly think there are not bozos in Illinois who would like to bring ill-will to the president?

And what is you map supposed to prove? All that shows is that Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan all have more hate groups than Indiana does. In fact, it looks like Chicagoland has as many as, if not more than, Indiana.

Gee, I've never heard Indiana described as backwards.

My take on the state is that it is middle America, wholesome, lots of farm land and a nice place to live.

Plus, it's a basketball state and I love basketball.

I have never witnessed any lynchings in Indiana. It's a fine Midwestern state and don't let anyone tell you differently.

The term is usually used by folks with liberal/progressives/communist/socialist mindsets.

Indiana:
-Doesn't have a hate crimes law, we treat all victims as equal, yet we are "backwards."

-Doesn't tax people to the hill so every K-12 school can have a 1,000 seat auditorium and indoor swimming pool. Therefore, our kids aren't "well rounded" and thus we are "backwards."

-We don't treat law-abiding adults like children by not allowing them the right to own various firearms, therefore we are "backwards."

The list goes on and on.

Indiana voted blue in the last presidential election. And there are/have been KKK chapters in dozens of states.
