I'm not sure how many people have heard yet, but there was a pretty large fire on the Paoli square today. It made the Chicago Tribune and MSNBC news as well as the local media. Looks like it started in a bank and spread to the connecting buildings. Several families lost their apartments, the Chamber of Commerce was lost and the welfare office burned as well which is a big hit for a county with one of the highest poverty rates in the state. Firefighters from as far away as Jasper and Crane Naval base were called in to help. These 200 year old buildings were a complete loss. A sad day for my hometown for sure.

I live just north of the square and the smoke was very heavy. My daughter takes Tae Kwon Do and my hubby was helping her instructor with building their house on site about 10 minutes' drive from the square out 150 and you could still smell smoke and FD's were coming that far to get water. (We later found out that FD's as far away as Greenville were coming in to assist).

They practically depleted the water supply that day trying to put it out. It's sad. That part of the square is bereft! The mural for French Lick and for Lost River Market are both gone. 4 buildings gone. The only thing left standing is the old bank vault and even it sustained quite a bit of damage.

No news yet what the plans are for the site.

Thankfully, there were NO injuries!!
