Hello! I know they do the VIN inspection in Indiana- and I saw the form on what they look for, but then what happens? I.e. are there things that will prevent you from being able to register your car or something?

If so, what are they? I plan on buying a used car from a private party before moving up, and want to make sure I pass.

Thanks!

I don't live in Indiana, so I am just taking a stab in the dark here. First of all VIN is generally referring to the Vehicle Identification Number, not something that would be necessarily inspected but if it is checked, it could let you know if the car has been reported stolen or totalled. If you have seen the form and know what they will be inspecting, any reputable inspection station should be able to let you know what happens if you don't pass. Another option would be to contact the bureau or department of motor vehicles and they should be able to answer your questions.

I'm not sure what all is required of the VIN inspection. For starters, the form seems to, at a minimum, request that a law enforcement officer visually inspect that the VIN plate matches the title, etc.. There is also a box to see if the VIN was ran through NCIC/IDACS. IDACS is an Indiana database where stolen items can be entered, NCIC is the nationwide counterpart. I'm not sure if BMV requires an NCIC check or not. Most officers will run an NCIC check because it can do two things:
-Makes sure the VIN is not forged
-Makes sure the car is not stolen

I remember having one done. The BMV lady came out and looked at my VIN on the car and basically said OK and put it on my registration. That's all I remember.

Yup, that is it exactly. They just want to make sure the car on your registration is the car you actually have.

When I moved here they checked the VIN's on both my cars. They looked at the dash and the tag on the inside of the door.
