Hi all, and happy 2011!

I was just wondering if anyone could comment on the family-friendliness of West Lafayette, IN. My kids are 3 and 6, and I would be looking for a friendly, laid back, walkable community with good quality schools and a nice library, with good access to nature and to cultural events like concerts and plays and whatnot. Also, proximity to bigger cities (Chicago, Indy) is a plus.

I have previously lived in Urbana, IL and am generally a big fan of the Midwestern college town lifestyle, so I was just wondering if anyone could chime in on West Lafayette in this regard. Did you grow up there? Did you raise your kids there, or are you currently doing so? What are the main strengths and weaknesses, as far as you are concerned?

I grew up in WL. The schools are great. If you want a walkable community then you should live in the neighborhoods surrounding Purdue. But everything will be a long walk away, but a very short drive away. The area is very family friendly. My dad still lives in the area and we bring our kids 3 & 5 back to WL every year or so. There is plenty to do. Purdue offers plenty of cultural events. Having lived several other places I would not think twice about moving back to WL to raise my kids and I am not someone who is dying to "go home again".
