We didn't leave Indiana because we were unhappy, we left because we had a desire in our lives for something different. We left for a working vacation for 3 -4 years & we are still here.
We have local friends but we are still Haloe & some still carry that hate & treat us that way..
But, after all these years our hearts & souls seem to still have the Midwest memories. It's very hard to explain & really don't expect anyone to understan but that's ok... We have lived daily with the locals & have learned their lifestyles but at the same time we didn't realize we were giving up our own heritage.
So, at this stage in our life we have come to realize that we respect the Hawaiian culture but we must get back our native culture too, weather it be in Indiana, Idaho, or where ever you were born ..
Don't be afraid to go back to the things that are burning in your heart. Indiana has it beauty in the people like any where else * actually it has a lot of beautiful lakes & a different way of life. I guess you could call it down home..( where a neighbor is a REAL neighbor).
There is good & bad in each & every city & state but if you have a desire to try somewhere else then so be it & go do it!!! Not every City or State is going to please each & every one of us
The streets could be lined with Gold & most of us would find fault with something----
So, go out into the world & discover but don't be so alarmed one day that you miss & yearn for HOME....I guess you could call it the Circle Of Life..
Be well, be strong , give encouragement, but be silent unless there may be a threat you may want to warn someone about.....
I know this is an old thread, but your comments reflect the way that I feel. I grew up in Indiana, moved to FL for a job after college and have been in S.Florida for 40 years. I so miss Indiana....I want to come home where people are 'down to earth' and the simple ways of living. I have a real yearning to return and hope to do so within the next few years.

After growing up in Indy and working in Bloomington/Indy, I left at 31 for a great job transfer to an hour west of Boston. That was followed by Buffalo, Fort Lauderdale, Northern California and Southeastern Washington State during the past 27 years. Found mostly great jobs, met a lot of fantastic people and many friends, lived and traveled among gorgeous scenery. Essentially, what I was looking for when I left.

Now, ~10 years from retirement, the inability to see the many relatives and friends in Indiana on a regular basis is a big deal. Plus many more relatives and friends stretching to the East Coast, within driving distance from here but not from The West. I recently got lucky and found an IT manager position with a great company in Evansville that exhibits an above-average interest in its employees. My kind of firm. That and I expect to be able to provide good value to them, partly because of my diverse work experience.

Now my wife and I can play an active role in their lives instead of being the virtual siblings, aunt/uncle and friends we have been. Yes, I will dearly miss the Winter sunshine we had in several locales. We are more liberal than many here. And there is that brother that sometimes drives my wife crazy.

Regardless, I fully expect the next ten years will be a regular MasterCard commercial - priceless.

I dont really believe in the "boomerang effect". I have family who have moved far far from Indiana and they dont like even visiting here lol. I have a 81 year old great uncle who left here when he was 32 and has called San Diego his home since. Others in Oregon, Washington. You dont hear alot about the successful moves, but the "boomerangs" are thrown into the spotlight.
But Indiana has good and bad as any state. No place is perfect.

I just moved back to Newburgh, IN after living in Southern California for 30 years. I am so thrilled to be back here where it is wet, lush and green. I was so sick of the hot, ugly desert and the weird liberals out there. So glad I made it home!

RICKYY, Our family too moved back to Indiana (Goshen) after 32 years in So. California (Phelan, the last 8 yrs). I agree with you, so happy to see green grass again!! I was so ready to get away from the dirt, wind, and wildfires. The plus is being near family again!

I'm in the same camp as your relatives. I moved to FL with my parents when I was 16. No picnic there either, but I realized there were different places to live than Indiana, that weren't as boring, to me at least. W/O going into all of my moves over the years, I've now lived most of my life on the East Coast, Mass. & NY, & I'm bored to tears when I go back to Indiana for a visit. It's like a bit of "culture shock" when I go back there, I kind of have to "translate it" to what I've become used to. Not that I don't have mixed feelings, I just don't feel "at home" there anymore.....

Yeah, everyone is different.

I have lived in other states and in bigger cities. They definitely had their positives.

One thing those other cities couldn't beat Indy on was location (central) and cost of living. Even when I didn't have much money, I knew I could live comfortably and even travel all over while living in Indy. You can't do that in Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, or New York. It's a struggle just to pay the rent in those cities.

I traveled to 49 states and 21 countries by the time I was 30 years old. I'm proud of that. This was for leisure, not work. You can go a lot of places when you only have to pay $600 a month for a nice apartment and you have two incomes.

Well, I grew up in Indiana and moved to southeast Florida after graduating from college. I worked for 40+ years in Florida and yearned to be back in Indiana for the last 25 years! This past October I returned to my hometown in Indiana. I am so happy here! Friendly, honest people. Good, polite drivers (in most cases) and four seasons! Good soil in which to garden, a much cheaper COL. I am so glad to be back 'home'.
