Greetings all!

My wife and I have to make an unexpected move to Indianapolis. My two sister-in-laws live in Indiana (Beech Grove and Bates-Hendricks neighborhood of Indy). However, we need to live in North Indianapolis. We are Jewish and as far as we can tell all of the synagogues are north. Can anyone recommend some affordable neighborhoods to rent in that vicinity? We are both taking a substantial pay cut and cannot afford more than approx $1000 a month.

Thanks.

The Carmel neighborhood has plenty of apartment complexes and some are right around the top of your budget for a 2 bedroom. It's also going to be one of the safer neighborhoods in your budget. It's centrally located to many of the synagogues in the area as well. I wouldn't personally recommend going into northern Marion County just because of congestion and crime issues once you get to a certain area, but because your budget is so tight and the most northern parts of Indy are generally speaking the most expensive, you might have to consider an area like Castleton or Nora as well. Just don't go to Lakeside Point at Nora - that place changes names with every crime that has taken place there - I used to live there when I was young and cash strapped and I did not feel safe there.

There's a synagogue at 71st & Keystone. I pass nearby along Kessler and Allisonville Road every day. Seems like a nice neighborhood, and Apartments.com shows some places in your price range.

Several synagogues on the map are close to flood plains. Personally, I wouldn't live on one.

My sister used to live there, within the last couple of years. She never expressed feeling unsafe; she always said the adjacent complex was where "the crime is."

(I don't have an opinion either way, I never felt unsafe there but I did not live there. I just thought calling out one specific apartment complex was interesting)

What area of northern Marion County has crime issues? I thought it was all pretty safe.

There's only one synagogue in the city of Carmel, and there's nothing in OP's price range nearby.

Thanks all! Based on your recommendations we feel we're going to have to expand our search a bit. I can find some affordable houses to rent that may be a better alternative to apartments. The good thing is that Indianapolis appears to be small geographically (you can cover a lot of the city rather quickly on the freeways).

The area west of 71st and Keystone is awful (Ravenswood), also there are parts of the 91st and College around the apartment complexes that have some trouble as well. I had friends that lived at 71st and Olney right on the corner there and they had a home invasion and burglary - took their flat screen TV right off the wall in the middle of the daytime.

I could have sworn there were two in Carmel, but you don't have to live right across the street from it...geez. Not like Carmel and northern Marion vicinity takes 45 minutes to traverse....I was looking for a safer neighborhood in their budget that wouldn't be an unreasonable drive to their desired places of worship.

Fantastic retort.

Have you spent any time in Ravenswood? I went there with a friend for a 4th of July one year totally ignorant to how racist and backwoods that one little section of town is. I watched a young black kid get mobbed by a group of white thugs and the cops came out and the things I heard from the adults over there? Not at all where I would recommend a Jewish couple hang out.

Buddy of mine lives in Ravenswood. I've never seen anything like you are describing.
