If working in Marshall, should we live in Marshall, Terre Haute or some place different. How harsh are the winters there?

You ask how are the winters there... depending upon what you are used to, could be better, same, worse . As to which city to live in, also depends - do you have kids in school, what grades, what kind of school would you like, would you rather drive ~40-60 minutes every day if commuting or potentially less if in the same town as where you work, etc.? Have you read the various threads regarding TH's pros and cons? Don't forget that you'd have the fun during tax time of having two separate state tax forms and of being in two different time zones too - not a big deal, yet still interesting [I've had & done it before]. Me, I would rather live where I want, even if it meant commuting some, and then if I did live in the smaller town/area, just go to the larger nearby city when needed/desired. Just something to think about.

Default Terre Haute or Marshall

It would just be my husband and I who are in our late 30's early 40's so the schools would not be an issue. My current commute is about 20 minutes one way so don't mind commuting 30 minutes or less but just didn't know what towns would be nearby that we could consider. Indinapolis is definitely too far away so any other suggestions would be helpful.

As far as the winters, we have rather mild winters in Alabama...hardly no snow but ocassional ice storms.

chester22 - how much night life, cultural activities, restaurants, parks, etc. do yas want there to be in the city/specific area yas will call home? Little town, relatively quiet, peaceful, such as Marshall, or somewhat larger, w/ the fixin's such as what TH offers? Other thing to consider, would be that if there would ever be an issue w/ a bridge over the Wabash, you'd be somewhat at the mercy of it being repaired/etc. in a timely manner, or finding other way over [there are two main bridges, the I-70 and the US40, plus the IN60]. True, that is a very rare issue, and not really worth thinking about - however, just came to mind... Anyhow, guess need to ask yourselves, what do you want your town to have to offer you, as far as extracurricular activities - TH is the biggest game in town - all others w/ in commuting radius of Marshall would be more or less the same potentially nice small community. If buggered a bit further west, and didn't mind a ~50 minute drive [plus the fuel/costs], then Effingham might also be an alternative if wanting a larger sized town [~3x] than Marshall.

ps: curious, whereabouts in 'bama? Lived on Sand Mtn, ~45 mins SE of Chattanooga. Beautiful area.

Default Terre Haute or Marshall

Currently living in the North Alabama area and got a chance to visit Terre Haute breifly last week. I was actually pleasantly surprised! Loved the small town feel to the area as I'm from a small town originally and was excited to see all of the new shopping that has gone up near I-70. Had dinner at Cheeseburger Paradise which was EXCELLENT! But I didn't get to see many of the neighborhoods or apartment complexes so hope to see that during my next visit as we consider our options.

Thanks for your input!

Hello,

May I join in here? I am also looking for safe and decent housing but I also need a good school district and wanted to know if it would be better to live on the outskirts of TH...rather than in the city proper? I am glad to hear something good bout it, being that we are being transferred and have no real choice in the matter!

I am thinking that a good school district would return a good resale value on my home? SO, I am thinking of trying to find out where the good schools are and then home shop from there, just in case we don't want to stay, I want to be able to sell my home when the time comes.

Hope you are having good luck Chester22 on your move up there!

I am envious of you in Terre Haute or who are moving there. I lived there for many years and would move back if my significant other would consider it...she likes the PNW so we are going to Washington...You will love Terre Haute...it is a very well kept secret...problems and all

So what side of town is better? What neighborhoods would be safer and more liveable? I have a child so a good school that is SAFE is most important to me, then of course a well sought out neighborhood with a very good rep is next, anyone???

Default former resident

the south side is better....Ohio Blvd used to be decent but I personally know of several strippers/drug dealers who live in that area.

South or East...have you considered Riley, just outside of TH to the east?
