I would recommend Peru, Indiana. nice small town that is on the turnaround and becoming a great small city again. I personally met Mayor Jimmy R walker and he works very hard bringing the city into the 21st century .
Plus its a short drive from Kokomo which has around 55,000 people but is more affordable than kokomo. Most of your shopping outside of standard grocery like kroger walmart etc will be in Kokomo. Also there is a new movie theatre being built in Peru and im sure there is a bowling alley there if not Kokomo will have one.
Peru also has that family town feel. My grandma lives there and all her family was born and raised in Peru very kind and generous people too.

I second Peru. We have several grocery stores,K-mart and a good mix of restaurants. Miami county has a lower cost of living then most of the other counties in this area. There are several community events thru out the year and we have a nice downtown with lots of small businesses.

Terre Haute, Columbus, Whiteland, Ellettsville...all those would be good I think. I grew up in Sullivan county, lived in New Albany, IN and now live in Terre Haute.
Terre Haute - I love the short commutes to work, hardly any traffic. Not much crime - I have left my garage door open many times on accident while at work and nothing stolen. Good public schools and 5 colleges, and downtown has really been revitalized. I used to want to live somewhere more "exciting", but as an adult can now appreiate all that it has to offer. 3 hours from St. Louis, 1 hour from Indianapolis, 3.5 - 4 hours to Chicago.

Terre Haute? No way. That place is a dump.

And, OP, your prices are unrealistic.

I agree with Columbus or Elletsville. I would think you could get a run down apartment in Elletsville for $450 or so. Columbus would probably be more. Don't even try Bloomington. A run down studio is still $400/mo.

Yeah maybe Ellettsville (in a not so great apartment) and you'd be close to Bloomington. Terre Haute is trash and rent is high in Bloomington, though Bloomington is a nice town.
