I'll be starting my PhD at Purdue in the Fall and need a place to live. Someone had suggested Lafayette as as an area a lot of grad students lived in as opposed to West Lafayette which has a lot of undergrads. I also want to be within fairly close walking distance to the bus line so I can leave my car home whenever possible.

What areas (bordered by what streets) should I be looking in and which ones will I want to avoid? It will just be me and I'm looking at studio and 1 BR apartments.

Thanks in advance!

All major apartment complexes are in walking distance to the bus lines. Also, most areas in Lafayette/West Lafayette are within walking distance(15min max.) to the bus lines. The only exceptions are the outlying suburban sprawl areas where you need a car.

I would recommend living in West Lafayette in the Chauncey Village neighborhood area. On boilerapartments.com that would be areas just north and south of State Street. Most of these areas are within walking distance to campus and if not they are only a very short bus ride from campus. Also, this area will finally be completely walkable next year when they open Fresh Market Lafayette a fully stocked grocery store. There are a few ethnic and small grocery stores in the Chauncey area, but they are all very pricey and have limited selections.

Downtown Lafayette is another good option. Nearly every single bus that goes around Greater Lafayette funnels into to the downtown transfer station. So if you live downtown you can get nearly everywhere fairly easily by bus.

Outside of the two areas I just mentioned commuting to campus by bus could be quite long. The bus system while fairly extensive isn't the best outside of downtown and campus. Outside of these areas the buses only run every 30 minutes whereas on campus they come like every 5 minutes during the day. Also, the further out you live the longer your commute will be. It can be up to 45min to an hour by bus if you live on the periphery of the city.

The only apartments that I would avoid are Cambridge Estates and Coppergate Apartments as those are consistently in the news for drugs and shootings. Those are in Lafayette and are quite far from campus. I hope this helps, I am now a junior at Purdue and I have only lived on campus, but I have become familiar with the areas adjacent to campus too. If you have anymore questions feel free to let me know.

Also, this is a map of the bus system City Bus Map. Many major apartment complexes appear on the map as well.
