Hi everyone. I am a teacher from New York. I have been a substitute teacher with one leave replacement under my belt. I am certified in Phys Ed, FACS, and Health Ed and have my masters. Now that I gave you my resume I am looking to relocate because they keep laying off teachers in NY. It is nearly impossible to get a teaching job in Ny. It is really bad here for teachers. Does Indiana need teachers? If not do you know of any other states in need? Thank you for taking the time to read this

I'm not sure what FACS is, but in general Indiana is similar to most states in that budgets have been hit hard in the past few years. Jobs might be found in some very small districts (read rural) and in a few of the urban districts such as Gary, Hammond or IPS, but your areas of specialization are not in high demand (although I don't know what FACS is). The other issue you will have is a masters degree. School districts tend to hire those with a BA or BS because the starting pay is lower than one with a masters.

Good luck.

Thanks for response. Ugh sometimes i feel so defeated in NY they won't look at you with out a Masters. FACS is Family and Consumer Science or some people know it as Home Economics.

Yep... You have a masters, most districts won't look at you, unfortunately.

i knew someone a few years ago from NY with the same issue--a masters degree in NY is almost required. She never found a job in Indiana for the few years she was here. She did land a job in TX.

I should have known FACS. One of my sibs was a FACS teacher years ago.

My advice would be to as open to moving anywhere in Indiana. Apply to public, charter and private schools.

NO! You don't want to come here if you are a teacher. This state is awful for teachers. There are so many teacher colleges here that not only can you not find a teaching job here, you can't even find a job that pays a living wage. I have been back here for three years and have yet to even receive an interview for a job that pays above $10 an hour. Coming back to Indiana was one of the biggest mistakes of my life.

Well, I am sure the few teachers who find jobs in Indiana are happy because at least they aren't unemployed in this state. I don't know though. Of course for each position in Indiana, there are at least 2000 applicants. I even know that in some places in Indianapolis are receiving up to 600 applicants per position. A friend of mine applied in one of the worst neighborhoods in Indy and was told that they received 600 applicants, so that is where I got that number.
