Hello,

We are newlyweds moving to indiana. I am a nurse and my husband has a trucking bussiness. We are looking for a house between 200-300K.

Looking to find some nice neighborhood based on following factors:
1. Best place to raise a family and safe (low crime) area
2. School (looking for best schooling options either public or private)
3. Diversity. We are Asian Indian family of Sikh faith and Punjabi speaking. It will be good to have some Indian community and/or diversity in the neighborhood.
4. Activities. A community with decent social activities.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check out Fort Wayne.....200-300k will get you a nice place. NWACS and SWACS are the best in terms of schools although there are many parochial and private options. There are 2 Sikh temples in the Fort Wayne area. There seems to be a few down in Indy as well. Indy will be more expensive than Fort Wayne but will probably have more diversity. Fort Wayne is Indiana's second largest city and is becoming more and more racially diverse. (I'm a Ft. Wayne native of ~40 yrs). There's plenty to do here and it's great for raising a family.

BabyBear1234 is correct Fort Wayne is a great value for your money and a great community!

As for Indianapolis and surrounding communities your money will still get you into pretty much any community you desire. While the Southside of Indy does have a growing Asian community they are mostly Burmese and Christian affiliated. Nothing wrong with that, just if you see Asian demographics represented there is as good a chance that they are Burmese as they are Sikh. There is I believe a Sikh temple somewhere around Greenwood or Whiteland areas. I know for sure there is a Sikh temple right off Interstate 74 in the Franklin Central High School area (South East). And quite a few of the children from that temple community go to MSD of Franklin Central schools (not to be confused with Franklin Community Schools).

Most of the Indian communities I know of though in greater numbers, and not all are Sikh, were located in Hendricks or Hamilton County areas. Again as you look at demographics Carmel area will list numerous Asian groups but many are not Indian. However a good many could be still. There are 2 Sikh temples in the Fishers area near Geist on the Eastern portion of Hamilton County. I'm not sure if the temple is still used or not, but when I was in high school on the westside of Indianapolis there was a temple right off Rockville Rd and S High School Road near 465 that served the westside and there were Punjabi speaking Indian students at my school. Some were Sikh but some of them were Hindu as well. The numbers in the community have moved out more towards Avon and Brownsburg since I was in high school, but I would guess that is where they may attend temple.

Summary for Indy:
Southside look more at the Franklin Central schools area or maybe Whiteland. Lots to do in this area with malls and water parks and other things, mostly safe though other areas may be better.

Westside I'd look more at Brownsburg or Avon. Plainfield is a great community but does not have the diversity that Avon or Brownsburg do.

Northside look more in the Fishers or Carmel areas. There won't be as much diversity still, but would be more than some in the area. North Central HS is another school that has pretty good diversity and close to those areas where the temples are and many things to do too.

Hope that helps.

Ft. Wayne does pretty good for a town its size. It's the cheapeat city to live in the United States.

Meh other cities are cheaper when you do more digging(Toledo, Memphis and arguably Cleveland).

That said, I believe moving to Pittsburgh was a mistake for me lol. 3 weeks and sill haven't landed a FT job despite interviews and lots of call backs.. If the job market isn't destroyed I'll consider a back to Indiana but don't want to to deal with FW or Indy.
