If you live in Indiana, doesn't matter whether it's in the Northwest or way down in Southern Indiana, if you had to vacation within the state border, where would you want to visit or recommend if you had a week? I know even a week is not enough time to really see the Hoosier state from all four state borders but where would you want to go or see?

Depends on time of the year, but in general I would hang out near Lake Michigan and the Dunes.

For a whole week? You might was well do a full state tour.

But if I was stuck in one locale, I'd choose Indy, followed by Bloomington and French Lick.

I dont know what it's like now, but we use to like to go to Lake Shafer near Lafayette and even nearer to Monticello. They had pedal boats and carnival rides and carnival games to play. I use to like to play ski-ball. They would have a band and a dance on the weekends. They had a big slide that was high up in the air, we'd climb up the steps to the top of the slide and then slide down about 90 miles an hour into the water and make a great big splash. We had a blast. There was no 6 Flags or Kings Island in Indiana that I knew of. Lake Shafer was about as close to an amusement park as it got in Indiana. Lake Shafer was like the Delaware County Fair in Muncie, or the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis, but with a lake and it lasted 3 months instead of 10 days. It was a good time. I'm pretty sure it's still around.

When I "vacation" in Indiana, it is usually either to the Dunes or Brown County. Honorable mention to French Lick. I live in Indianapolis, I'd imagine Indy would be on the list for me if I lived elsewhere.

What's in French Lick that it's so popular with tourists? I never heard of French Lick until Larry Bird came along and made it famous. Now-a-days, French Lick is kinda famous all over the country and I never could figure out what for.

Spend a day at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on Lake Michigan. If you've never been, spend a couple days in Indy. Maybe a day in Brown County State Park. Then do an overnight in French Lick at the West Baden Springs Hotel. The place is unbelievable! You can take a trolley or shuttle to the casino or walk the 1 mile path along the woods. Spend a day at Holiday World theme park in Santa Claus if you're visiting in season. You can also check out one of the many caves while you're down there such as Marengo Cave (a US National Natural Landmark) or Wyandotte Cave (both world heritage sites) or head over to Clifty Falls State Park near Madison.

The French Lick Resort and Casino. Both the French Lick Springs Hotel and the West Baden Springs Hotel are historic landmarks. The casino used to be a big draw and it's still the only land-based one in Indiana allowed to have live dealers at table games. There's also a very nice golf course and hiking trails into the hills. The West Baden Springs Hotel has a huge atrium with several places to just sit and relax. There is often live music. When we were there there was a piano player which the sound made the atrium even more relaxing. The French Lick Springs Hotel has a huge porch that was perfect for getting a drink or some ice cream and sitting watching the world go by.

A couple pictures I took from my first trip there this summer. These are of the West Baden Springs Hotel (which was my favorite of the two) and the pictures do not do it justice at all.

Add another must see for French Lick. Many years ago we took a trip there and saw Baden Springs
when it was abandoned and in terrible shape. At one time it was considered the 8th wonder of the
world and with the help from Bill and Gayle Cook it has been meticulously restored. It is definitely
worth seeing.

There are also several caves if you are interested in spelunking. Marengo Cave is not too far from
French Lick.

There are also others (you can find others online). Here's two more:

Spash

Then there's the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. $10.00 with a very knowledgeable tour guide.
When we went, they (and that was about 6 years ago) were closed on Mondays but their website
now shows that they are open.

If you want to see the Indiana Dunes, there is a nice town (Chesterton) in Porter County. There's
a small downtown and some nice restaurants. Since it's off season it shouldn't be as busy
(many Chicagoans have summer homes there) but there are two drawbacks this time of year:
-possibility of snow (and if it's Lake effect snow it can get bad).
-cold temperatures. You would have to bundle up if the wind, cold and combination of
snow and wind chill should happen. It would feel especially harsh being on Lake Michigan's shores.
btw, Chesterton is about 45 miles from Chicago. The South South train does have a stop in
Dunes Park.
