We are native Michiganders from the Metro Detroit area. Husband just got a job offer from a company in La Porte. We are going to have to make a decision soon. We know little about Michigan City, although we've lived in South Bend for about 8 months in the past. Where are the optimal areas for schools and accessible amenities? We are both professional African Americans. He's an engineer and I'm a teacher. Diversity is a preference, and although no area is absolutely perfect, we'd like some input on some of the stronger communities. Thanks a lot.

Schools for teaching? Or schools for sending your kids? Valparaiso has some of the best schools in the area. Chesterton is also good. I taught at VU briefly and enjoyed my time there. You should also consider Granger in the opposite direction. Great schools.

I second Valparaiso. We moved here from the Chicago burbs a year ago and have been thrilled w/ the schools and still short commute to Chicago. We love our neighborhood and the fact that we are close to the borders of Michigan and Illinois. Good luck in whatever you decide.
