Getting weary of the search but I hope we're drawing closer to finding a suitable and final resting place - above ground, that is.

We like NE Indiana but have a very limited budget. The greater Ft. Wayne area is too expensive so we're looking at outlying areas within about 30 miles or a half hour drive of the city.

Would even consider NW Ohio if that state offers more to budget-bound persons. Town size does not matter, though it would be nice to have decent grocery, hardware and the other essentials. A good fitness or community center would be a bonus but not likely in small towns. Don't like river bottom/flood zones. Prefer higher ground, though we are well aware that Indiana is not the Rocky Mountains.

Proximity to Amtrak wins points also.

Any suggestions for safe and pleasant small towns will be appreciated.

Not sure what your budget is or if you are looking for a house or mobile home. Small towns like Waterloo, Ashley, Garrett, Butler, and Fremont have fairly low housing prices. Some of these towns have gas stations, small grocery stores, community centers and some don't. They are all within 15 minutes or less of a town with hardware, grocery, fitness, doctors, dentists and a hospital. Kendallville ,IN is a small town with all of the amenities and reasonable real estate prices. I don't know much about Ohio, but Bryan,OH or surrounding towns like Montpelier or Pioneer might have what you are looking for. Hope this helps a bit.

Bryan, Oh and Waterloo, IN both have Amtrak stations.

I think I saw somewhere your budget was around 75,000. You might be able to find something in Angola, In for that, especially if you are ok with a fixer or mobile home. Angola is a safe small town. It has grocery stores, fitness centers, doctors, a small hospital and generally whatever amenities one might need. It is also close to several lakes and 30 or 40 minutes more or less to Ft Wayne.

You are very welcome. There are so many small towns around this area. If you find you are interested, it is well worth a few trips to visit. Even maybe contact a realtor to show you around to get a feel for what town might work for you.
