I saw that U-Haul has recently published their 2021 state growth information. This is data where someone rents a U-Haul in one state for a one-way trip to another state. The idea is that most of these are people moving from one state to another and thus the need for a one-way rental.

For 2021, Indiana comes in at fourth place, which surprised me. For 2020, Indiana was 12th and for 2019, the state came in 9th. The 2019 release showed that for 2018, the state was down in the middle of the pack at 26.

Going from #26 to 9th, 12th, and now 4th place definitely makes me understand why housing prices have taken off in the Indy area.

The states that are the big winners over the last few years: Texas and Florida. Both have been in the top three the last four years. Tennessee made the top three the last two years. It seems that the majority of the top ten states over the years are more mild to fair winter weather states, though some of the more moderate to severe winter season states did make the list here and there. Utah, Vermont, Colorado, and Idaho seemed to be the more popular states when it came to moderate to severe winter seasons.

Oddly enough, if one looks at reports from Atlas Van Lines and United Van Lines, the lists are somewhat different. Some of the same states are still ranked high, but other states are replaced. This makes me wonder if people using U-Hauls are more low to moderate income, trying to save money as a do-it-yourself mover, while those hiring the work have more money. Then next question is then how does this income issue play into where people are moving to?

We moved from IL to the NWI region and did a U-haul DIY move. We rented and returned in IL so we may not have been included in those numbers, but it was far cheaper for us to DIY - like thousands cheaper to where it felt impractical to hire this out. We were told by a few smaller moving companies the reason for the cost was state to state moves required them to be licensed and bonded in both states. Migration trends will be interesting the next few years as more companies have allowed workers to go remote and people have mobility they never had before.

Honestly I think most of the residents Indiana is gaining are from Illinois (all part of the "Illinois exodus"). We were part of the exodus during fall 2020. I wish they could poll how many residents were coming from each state. I know people are coming from other states as well but Indiana is an easy/safe move when coming from Illinois. Plus residents in the Chicago area can remain in the "area" but save a boat load on taxes. It's a no-brainer for a lot of people.

My exodus was in 1992 - after the parents died my taxes tripled. I have returned for visits, but stayed in Merrillville & Crown Point. And now looking at my old home the taxes have tripled again. Of course the home has been sold five times since I left it. NWI is still a better place to live and grow a family.
