Never been through Evansville and my wife and I were talking about the area last night. In the past (based on research and conversation) I feel like the city has gotten a bad rap. Is it dying a slow death or reviving itself? What's it known for and is it a nice place to live?

I would describe Evansville as pretty stagnant, it isn't really dying or growing. Downtown has seen some improvements of late, but those improvements are pretty slow relative to what other cities have experienced. Evansville's tallest building sat empty for 15 years, and they are now planning to tear it down in order to build a 5 story mixed use development. It is the sort of development popping up in cities all over the place, but in other cities they're not tearing down their tallest building and calling it an "upgrade." That speaks a lot to how starved Evansville is for something good to happen.

I grew up in the Evansville area and visit often. It is a nice city, but it hasn't changed much at all in the last 30 years aside from an arena, casino, and river front walkway.

It is a stagnant city surrounded by multiple toxic super polluters on several sides in a 30 mile radius. If the toxic super polluters are finally retired it might have a better future 10-20 years from now.

It is a stagnant city somewhat isolated from anywhere. When I-69 is completed all the way to Indy in 2022-2023 may help. Needs new Ohio river bridge badly to finish I-69 into KY. May take time to connect with Memphis. Not sure if having casino gambling has helped any with so much competition from IL. As a visitor shopping on east side seems OK but nothing you can't find other places.

Lived there for 5 yrs in the 90s, and went back to visit in 2011. Still have a ton of friends there. I'm a native Hoosier, and it feels like the SW corner of the state is just neglected in so many ways...putting it behind the times. Glad to see I-69 finally coming to fruition...maybe that'll be the catalyst for change.

I had a question about the reputation of each side of town and particularly the west side and far west side. I guess the far west side is known to be blue collar and isolated? Is this true?

To an extent, the eastern side of the city into Warrick County is generally nicer.

Sounds like Evansville has many similarities to South Bend. I have never visited Evansville, living on the opposite end of the state I may never get around to visiting, but I am still curious about it.

I do know the same designer for Evansville's tallest building also designed the tallest building in South Bend, which was vacant for about a year, and is now 50% occupied by the new and trendy Aloft Hotel.

You grew up on the west side of Evansville, supposedly. Why don't you tell us?

Evansville's tallest building is about to be demolished in about the most Evansville move possible. It has been mostly vacant for almost two decades.
