Hello, I'm a Black woman moving to Lafayette this summer from Sumter, South Carolina with my husband and two kids. We've had some problems here and we are ready to move somewhere else. I'm wanting to buy a home in the range of 200k-250k. I'm looking for a part of town with great schools, diverse, and relatively low crime rate. Thanks in advance for your all opinions.

The West Lafayette side of town (where Purdue is located), has a very well regarded school system.

The Indiana Department of Education has a very good website if you'd like to check there.

Have you contacted a realtor yet? If not, pm me and I'll give you a recommendation.

I would definitely go to the West Lafayette school system, and I think you will love it. (Not all West Lafayette homes are in the West Lafayette school district, so you have to be careful.)

I just put up a post at a related thread
//www.city-data.com/forum/india...ight=lafayette
that is very detailed and may be helpful to you.

Comparative school stats are on the nwheights.com neighborhood in West Lafayette.
Our house for sale is mentioned in that thread. You can also see it at 1700western.com

Dont move to the eastside of Lafayette. That part of town is king territory.
The Kings is a chicano gang with lowriders, guns, etc. Just last month there was a drive by around there that killed someone. I suggest that you move to West Lafayette.

That is the most ridiculas thing I have ever heard! I live in Lafayette (eastside) and have for 20 years. There was no drive by and the crime rate is actually pretty low considering our size. The eastside school corporation is also very good. This is a great place to live and we would welcome you and your family!

someone is passing out false info about Lafayette. To my knowledge, there isn't a gang problem there and probably won't be either.

the city school system sucks though. Move to West Lafayette if you have school age children.

Don't rule out small towns too. They tend to be mostly white, but could use some diversity. There is a small town called Fowler that is about 30 miles from Lafayette, but if you are used to driving that kind of distance in a large city, this will be a walk in the park (you might get a little road tired, but a great way to wind down the day). You get a lot of house and land for the money. Their website is www.townoffowler.com and there is a great private, very affordable school there that excel's each year in academics. The school is Sacred Heart and you can see their website at www.sacredheartfowler.org - Sacred Heart of Fowler. They are also about 90 miles from Chicago and you can get there on highway 41 pretty quick.

Default Lafayette is great

Lafayette is a great place to live and raise a family. Although still predominantly white, there is a growing diversity in population. West Lafayette, home of Purdue University, includes families of all nationalities. You might want to consider living in a rural area of Tippecanoe county. The Tippecanoe county schools are pretty good and the area is growing. Don't believe what another poster said about gangs and drive-by shootings. This is a safe area, overall, and a very nice place to live. If you make an effort to be a part of whatever community you choose to be your home, I believe you will be welcomed.
