hello all-

I am thinking about moving to the Frankfort area for a job opportunity and wanted to get advice on nice areas to live in. My wife and I are in our mid 20s and we have heard about the racial tensions in Indiana (we are both African-American)

Can someone please give some insight? What are some good areas to live in?

I would probably look at living in Lafayette if possible--more diversity (although not really that diverse)--and well--better homes and neighborhoods/jobs to choose from.

I agree that Lafayette or West Lafayette would be a better choice than Frankfort. The schools are better in West Lafayette.

First, what racial tensions are you referring to? There's been no rioting or hate crimes that I can think of recently.

Nonetheless, I would second the comments regarding the Lafayette area. It's more affluent. I recently went through Frankfort and found it to not be as well kept as most of the smaller communities surrounding it.

what about indianaopols as an alternate. Is it a bad drive from the city to frankfort?

I am having problems finding new construction homes in lafayette/west lafayette. Does anyone know of any good neighborhoods?

If you live on the far northside of Indy, you can drive to Frankfort in about 45 minutes.

I have a question about Lafayette. I grew up there and lived in Laf. until I grad. from Purdue in 1973. I then moved to south Florida. I've read such negative talk about Lafayette schools and problems at Jeff. It used to be a great high school. What has happened in the last 36 years?

Many things change in 36 years and Lafayette has certainly experienced much change, some good and some not so good. Those who live in Lafayette oftentimes don't see it but those on the outside coming in do. I had one person say that 'Lafayette is becoming another Marion.'

The one thing I would caution you about though is winter driving on 65. Mostly the stretch between Indianapolis and Frankfort is fine, but there are times when it's pretty treacherous along 65. Because it's mostly open fields after Lebanon the snow blows across the highway causing whiteouts, icy patches, etc. It's scary as heck to drive through that because it can happen unexpectedly.

I messaged you quamaze. I'm not sure where you have been looking but there is plenty of new construction in and around Lafayette--are you looking for something brand new like a builders spec home or something lived in but built within the last few years? There are also plenty of nice neighborhoods in which you can use a custom builder if you are looking to build a new home.
