OK, so I'm an elementary education student also pursuing a license in mild interventions (special educ.) ... and here are the districts I'm considering applying to...

Gary Community School Corp.
Merrillville Schools
Hammond Schools
South Bend Community School Corp.

Does Merrillville need teachers at the elementary level/special ed? Are they hiring?

OK, I know people say Gary is bad... that's where I'm from, so I would want to "give back" to the community? How are the schools now (elem.)?

Are Hammond schools even hiring for elementary teachers (I will have a special education endorsement too).

South Bend? ... I don't know what to think... ?

What are the salaries like for brand new teachers....
From what I hear, Gary pays good... how good though, I wonder? (Although, that wouldn't be a job I'd be taking for the money, but more for the love.)
What are the beginning salaries like in those parts of northwest Indiana and South Bend (northern Indiana).

Any opinions/facts would help greatly! Thanks a ton!

Teacherlady--They would have to pay me a fortune to teach in Gary! Your desire to do so is admirable. I graduated from Lew Wallace in 74. i drove thru Gary last year and just wanted to cry! It looks like a war zone. please think long and hard about where you want to teach. If you do choose Gary I will keep you in my prayers!!

My husband is considering a career change and we might be leaving Michigan. I wanted to know if other states were hiring teachers (I am a special education teacher) and how much they paid. I found a website that lists all of the school districts by county, by state and you can look on their websites to see if they are hiring. It costs $20 for a lifetime membership but I found that it saved me tons of time and was well worth it. Plus, they have a money back guarantee if you do not find a job. The website is Teaching Jobs. K-12 Teaching Jobs, Administrative Jobs, and Coaching Jobs at Education Jobs. Browse 1000's of public and private school jobs
Good luck to you!

Default It's not as bad as you think

Gary has schools other than public schools you know and yes they need special ed teachers. I work at Aspire Charter Academy and it is a beautiful school with a supportive staff and administration. This school is very regimented and operates with a high level of rigor. which helps to keep the behavior problems down. Please don't write off Gary schools because of what you've heard or seen. There are kids out there who need dedicated teachers who are willing to work hard with them and provide positive roll models for them.

Bowman Academy is a charter school in Gary as well. To be honest, I think the state is about ready to shut down the public schools in Gary ... it's just sad. There was one elementary school in Gary that made the 4 star list recently ... Banneker????

Just saw on the news recently that South Bend is looking at some serious layoffs in the next 3 years.

I imagine with the most recent additional budget cuts to education every school district in the state is looking at layoffs and/or a hiring freeze for the next few years. 50% of the most recent round of cuts came from education-both public schools and higher education. Disgusting in my opinion.

Nearly every city school in Indiana has a declining enrollment. In addition, this usually means that the need for teachers is not that great. Schools like South Bend, Gary, Evansville, Anderson, Indianapolis, Muncie, Elkhart, Hammond, etc... However, I am just talking about the "city schools," not the outlying areas, for the most part. I do know that Fort Wayne Community Schools is projected to be the largest school district in Indiana by the year 2015?? They have had a steady enrollment gain which ultimately means the need for more teachers because they get more funding with the more students. I don't know, something to think about?? Fort Wayne also could use some dedicated teachers in the city. It might not be as bad as conditions in Gary or South Bend, but there is a still a dire need for quality teachers here. Just a suggestion.

I was strongly consdiering going to college to become a teacher now,I don't think so .I don't want to spend four years in school and find there is still a hiring freeze or layoffs due to economy which could take a while to recover .
