My husband and I are moving to Indianapolis to be closer to his family and I am hoping someone can tell me a little bit about neighborhoods. In particular Congress Avenue in indianapolis, IN Zip is 46208 I think. My husband is looking at buying a house there and I am wondering what the neighborhood might be like because the home is quite cheap. Any information would be great. Also what areas to avoid due to crime would help as well. Please and Thank you.

I would say this area is very hit or miss. I've seen some nice areas and some really terrible areas. I'm assuming you're talking around 32nd and MLK. I've seen some nice areas a bit north around 40th and Boulevard Pl. You may want to consider the area around Butler Univ. "Rocky Ripple" There are some very established areas.

See my answer to the question posted in the Indiana section.

I do agree it is better north of 38th. Watch buying around Butler as there are increasing student/resident issues over noise and parking.

Congress Avenue is a very high crime area. People live there, it's not like Baghdad, but it's cheap for a reason ! Here's a map from 2002, still pretty accurate, sho9wing murders in Indy -

Sorry about the formatting.

Depending on how cheap you want and still be safe...you could try the east side between Linwood west and and Emerson east, north of Michigan, south of 10th. Example - about 44,000, fairly safe area.

F. C. Tucker Property Detail (broken link)

If you go to F. C. Tucker Co., REALTORS or Indianapolis homes condos apartments houses for sale Indianapolis Indiana Carmel Indiana homes Greenwood Homes they have map searches. C21 shows more info like taxes and lot size.

By and large I agree. However, based on my experience the really terrible areas in Indy are still in somewhat better shape than alot of the neighborhoods in Baltimore, Maryland. I lived in Baltimore city for nine years.
