Not entirely clear on what you consider affordable. Indy has a lot to offer by way of apartment complexes. As far as safety goes, you could start your search in the Castleton area. There are a lot of options along Allisonville road and 82nd street.

The Castleton area feeds into Lawrence Township schools. Just to the west, further down 82nd/86th street is Washington Twp which feeds into North Central HS.

Talking Where

I'm a new resident to Indy (been here a year) and there are good and bad complexes everywhere. Not sure where you are coming from but Indy is a lease city. No month-to-month. If you want a six month lease or less, even a m2m, then you'll pay a premium.

In regards to crime areas, check out the site below:

Crime in your neighborhood -- 2009

I was told to stay away from apts with gas heat, it is outrageously expensive in the winter.

Traffic and cost of living tend to be higher on the north (Carmel) and northeast (Castleton and Fishers) sides of town.

Greenwood and Beech Grove are nice southside. 30mins to downtown from Greenwood.

Plainfield is town on the west side. It's nice quiet area. again 30 mins to downtown.

A factor you may want to consider is where you are working. It can take an hour or more some days if you are living on the opposite side of work.

Good luck. check out the crime site. It will help guide you.
