To the OP: I have lived in Texas, and yes I know what you are talking about.

Nope. None of those here. Those nasty little (ha!) bast*ards will fly at you. The like to hide inside the shower stall and "surprise" you. They'll even crawl over you as you sleep. EWWWW.

We do have cicadas, as others have mentioned. They are big and look scary. They leave behind empty Alien-esque husks. Once you realize they are only husks, they are not so bad. They NEVER intentionally run/fly towards you though (as a roach will do) and in 10+ years in the Midwest I have NEVER found one indoors.

If you are bug-phobic moving to an area that has a nice long winter freeze can really be a blessing. Cuts down on the insects enormously.

Lived in Savannah, GA and definitely had those. I also recall seeing them in Bloomington in the summer while in college but they weren't as prevalent. At night, I would see them crawling all over the rock wall around the Arboretum, near the library. They never invaded my apartment though. Savannah, GA was entirely different. No matter how clean the house, they would inevitably make their way in.

I lived in Savannah too! Just walking around downtown or anywhere outside you'd see them run around. Ewww. Yeah I haven't seen any of those yucky bugs here in Indianapolis, thankfully.

Indiana is largely flying roach free unless one sneaks into your suitcase from Disneyworld.

I lived in the Florida Panhandle for 2 years and became all too familiar with these disgusting creatures. It is impossible to exterminate them from your property - you can only hope to keep their popuylation check by having the exterminator visit regularly and proactively spray.

I had a major phobia of them when I first moved there. Funny though, after you step on 100 of them or so they aren't so scary anymore...just a nuissance.
