Alright here is the dealio. I have an opportunity to relocate with work either to Oklahoma or Indy. I dont really want to live in OK. My wife and I have one child who will be entering school next year. So we want an area that is safe, family oriented, and has good school. I would be working downtown Indy. We would take a suburb or INDY if there is any good neighborhoods there. We will be looking to rent until we figure out we like the area.
Suggestions....go.

Well there are so many suburbs that all of us could list. Could you be specific with price range and amenities you want?

Hey! Welcome to the Indianapolis area. I moved here 4 years ago and bought a house in the downtown area. Indianapolis is a very family friendly affordable city to live in. As far as commute times go, traffic really is not that bad throughout the city even in rush hour. Traffic is mild compared to many other cites. Interstates 65 and 70 are the main interstates connecting into downtown. I am assuming school districts are high on your priorty of places to move. I actually have a friend who is a realtor that may be able to provide websites to help in relocation. He may be able to forward you websites that help rate the school districts of the surrounding burbs and help you narrow your search if you are interested. If you want his name just e-mail me at kdasen83@yahoo.com

A little more info would be helpful and there are TONS of similar threads on this same topic. That being said, I find most Relo folks gravitate towards the northern suburbs including: Zionsville, Carmel, Westfield, Fishers, and Noblesville (listed most to least expensive). Price will have a lot to do with your choice when you do eventually decide to buy. All very safe and very family oriented.
