Honestly downtown might be the best bet. Crime really isn't that bad downtown, and the hotels are pretty nice. Even better is that for only $15 per ticket, there is a shuttle between the track and downtown. This year the wife and I used this for the 500 and now will use this method for EVERY race. It only took about 15 minutes from downtown to the track since there are special lanes set up for these shuttles.

46224 is the zip code for Speedway which is the town the track is in. There is a Wingate Inn, Sleep Inn and a Comfort Inn all right together on Rockville Road in the 5700-5900 block. It is very close to the track and there is also the hotel at the track the name is Brickyard Crossing. In that part of town stay south of 25th street and outside of the I-465 loop.

I work in Speedway and can recommend that you not stay at any of the motels there. There are a lot of long term residents at these places. I would recommend any of the motels/hotels at 465 and west 71st st and 465 and west 86th street. It would be a very short drive to the track.
