I am seriously considering a job that is located in Batesville, IN, which is about a 60 minute drive southeast of Indianapolis, right on I-74.

We would prefer to live around Indianapolis because we'll have more school choices for our kids, more rental homes available and ultimately more houses to choose from for purchase. Here's our wish list:

- Safe
- Inexpensive
- Easy Access to I-74 for daily work commute
- Good schools
- Big enough to have good housing options.

Any recommendations?

THANK YOU in advance for any direction you can give.

Depending on how far north you are, Greenwood isn't an awful option either.

Shelbyville isn't a bad option, but not sure how great their schools are. NW Shelby County has a few little towns (mostly used for mailing addresses, if that) and they have two I-74 interchanges. This area is served by Triton Central Schools (Note: Their official name might be something like Northwest Shelby Schools).

I grew up in New Palestine and it is in Hancock County, just north of the Triton Central area. It has its own school system (Southern Hancock Community School Corporation/New Palestine High School). If you choose New Pal, you will want to stay closer to US Highway 52, and not US Highway 40. There is about a three to five mile gap between those highways depending on where you live in the greater New Palestine area. The time to get from the actual Town of New Palestine to an I-74 interchange is less than 10 minutes. It is about six or so miles to an interchange.

Note that both the NW part of Shelby County and the SE part of Hancock County is still somewhat rural. The Hancock part is more suburban, and has a lot more housing options. The Shelby County part has grown over the last 15ish years, but not by much. The Shelby County growth in the NW part of the county is mostly folks buying 1-5 acre plots of what used to be crop fields and building some pretty nice homes on them. The New Palestine area has been more along the lines of actual neighborhoods, most of them in the mid to upscale range. While suburban in relation to Indy, the counties aren't that populated, meaning the only issue you would have is during snow storms. A good snow storm might make it impossible to get to work, or it might make the commute twice as long.

Sounds like you need to be looking at Wanamaker area which is the Post Road exit off of I-74. A con is the school taxes in Franklin Township.
