Am thinking of moving here (narrowing down to a few cities), very affordable, but what neighborhoods should I avoid? The apartment websites only have it broken down like

NW, E, SE, Warren Township, Castleton, S, etc.

What areas are bad that I should not rent in?

I dont think you have any idea how big Indy is. There are good and bad neighborhoods on all sides of the city.

Generally, suburbs (outside of I465), north side above 38th and between Kessler and maybe Allisonville, or right downtown are better for safety. There are some exceptions but again, too big a city to go into great depth.

Single women live all over. Perhaps you should provide more detail as to price, amenities, what you want to live close to, do you want walkability, what stores are important, how much commute do you want, etc.

You are right; I have never been there, have no idea. That's why I need to post here. My only "amenity" I require is a safe place to live with rent around $450 (an efficiency is fine), and Indy seems to fit that bill. I have a car, I don't care about stores, restaurants or nightlife. I won't commute more than an hour to work. Prefer 30 minutes.

Default If you are willing to drive 30 minutes

South of Indy is Greenwood. There are apartment specials for studios under $500 and also some one-bedrooms under that with a 12 month lease signing. It is a safe community.
The city data crime index is 251 while the U.S. average is 319. In 2010 there were no murders, two rapes, 15 robberies and 172 assaults (many assaults are between individuals who know each other or in bars and that's only three a week).
It is about a 30 minute drive to downtown center — 12-14 miles.
Greenwood is more suburban feel — large mall and lots of big box stores. Family oriented.

Plainfield on the west side is more country town field with a lot of manufacturing and industrial. It is a nice friendly clean town. Again 30 minutes or so. Crime 234 rate.

There is also Shelbyville — although 28 miles away — is a 35 minute drive downtown because it is all highway. It is southeast of Indy.

Keep in mind though if you were to get a job in say Fishers or Carmel, then your commute on a clear day — no snow or rain — can be more than an hour from these places.

If you have a job lined up tell us where it is and we can be more helpful with recommendations.

I agree with the fact that outside the I-465 corridor is safer. Although as the writer points out some areas inside are good also.

Good Luck

I agree with maybemover. South side is what your budget will allow. It's a bit "redneckish", but it's pretty safe.

Greenwood area. Check it out.

I like the Greenwood area from 465 south. In fact, I would almost rather do my shopping there than drive to the northern spots. Much less stressful.
