Can anyone suggest a place in Indy where my wife and I can meet some Russian people? My wife is from Russia but has lived in the US for about 15 years. I'm new to Indy but from the Midwest, and I'm not Russian. It would be nice to have a place where we might meet some Russians, especially for when her parents visit. They are often here for a month or two at a time and really feel isolated sometimes. Thanks,

Mike

Do you two have children? Not saying that it's a prerequisite, but this might be a start.

Anyone know of a Russian village or area with restaurants, shops and Russian culture near Indiana?

Indianapolis doesn’t have as much in the way of ethnic neighborhoods that you might in an east coast city. Nothing particular comes to mind.

Are Russian neighborhoods common on the east coast?

Also, you may not know this since you're not from here and don't live here, but did you know there's a large Burmese community on the south side?

I don't know that you'll find many large Russian neighborhoods even on the east coast, outside of NYC. There are some very large, traditional Russian enclaves in parts of Brooklyn and other areas of NYC, but I can't think of many other east coast cities where you will find neighborhoods like that (outside of metro NYC).

Chicago has Ukranian Village and other pockets of Ukranian enclaves scattered throughout parts of the city. Obviously, Chicago is known for the extremely large Polish population, although they are pretty evenly scattered throughout so there is not really one specific "neighborhood." Also, the Polish here span the entire spectrum from recent immigrants, to 2nd/3rd generation but still culturally Polish, to Polish Americans who are 3rd generation and have Polish parents/grandparents/last names but are mostly just American.

I fall into the latter category. I'm Polish American but am culturally just American.

But overall, especially in certain parts of the city, you can find pockets of old-school Eastern European enclaves. There are some stores in sections of West Town/Ukranian Village where everything is in Ukranian/Polish and store owners speak very little English.
