I currently live in Arizona and am looking to move to the Midwest. My wife is from Missouri, and I have family in Wisconsin. We are looking at those two states as well as others in between. We've been looking in Wisconsin and it is extremely difficult to land a teaching job. I teach middle school/high school social studies, and every opening I apply to has over 150 applicants. So being from out of state, I usually don't get called for an interview.

I wanted to here from anyone that had insight into the viability of teaching jobs in my field in Indiana and surrounding states as well. If you have any knowledge of a comparison to Wisconsin that would be helpful because that is a benchmark I have some knowledge of.

Thanks.

Indiana's teaching jobs in the *Public* School system are rare however since Mitch Daniels is creating a Voucher Program to allow poor people into Private Schools there should be plenty of openings probably not now but in the next year or 2. I would suggest getting a job that would pay for housing etc. to get you settled down wait about 1 year for the Voucher Law to go into effect then try getting hired to a Private School. The Voucher program for the first 2 years has a limit on first year 25,000 people across the state then 2nd year around 50,000 and the 3rd year anyone with the qualified income can get in. Thats just my knowledge of the Indianapolis Public Schools which are laying off people. Suburban Schools i have no idea.

A lot of new teachers join the substitute/contract teacher ranks to get their feet in the door.

Our public school system is in a state of flux right now .... all I can say is good luck.

I have had the opportunity to meet some teachers this past year. A lot of them moved here from Wisconsin and Illinois because Indiana was the only place they could find teaching work. They tell me that it is easier to find work here, but I would have to take them at their word as I am not a teacher and have never tried to find work as a full time teacher.

At least here in central Indiana budget issues have forced considerable layoff of teachers. I could not point you to single school district in Indianapolis that is hiring. For that matter I can't think of an Indianapolis district that isn't reducing their teaching rosters.

I know for fact that Wayne Township is hiring right now. To the best of my knowledge, none of the folks I know in Wayne Township are facing layoffs.

Yes they are. A friend of mine has been interviewing for a job at Ben Davis HS over the last couple of weeks and likes his chances. It's not exactly where he wanted to end up but he's thankful for the opportunity nonetheless.
