I'm considering three apartments that pass my test for safety, cleanliness, etc, but I've heard mixed things about the locations. I know every area has pros and cons and I'd appreciate helpful, balanced comments on these options (not OMG don't live there or you'll DIE).

Option 1: 317 E. 38th St. (across from Oxford Gables apartments) between Washington Blvd and Central Ave.

Option 2: 2063 N Meridian (between IL Ave and PA Ave)

Option 3: 2152 N Meridian (between IL Ave and PA Ave)

Any advice on risk and types of crimes is appreciated (note: I'm also going to call the local police stations). There's a big difference between smash and grabs with cars, and armed breaking and entering. I've used the Crimemapper tool, but not having a baseline makes it hard to compare to my current area, since I'm from out of state. Thanks for your help!

A female friend of mine lives in a building on the corner of 36th and Meridian. She is from the west side of Chicago and says that the neighborhood around 36th and Meridian is not scary. I've only been over there once, with a group, and I wasn't feeling afraid. She has never been mugged, burglarized, or murdered. My lady friend visits a lot more often, she has only felt uneasy one time. I am certain the fright brigade will come down hard on the general 38th and Meridian area. It is kind of a "mad max" area if that makes any sense.

I think the problem areas are alleys, behind buildings in the area, and the commercial areas due to drugs and easy get away routes. There are renovated buildings and some new renovations going on right at the edge of 38th and Meridian. Lots of money being spent.

I would be aware of the buildings security systems and find out whether Section 8 or other housing assistance programs are accepted. The police is a good idea. I have found them to be very very helpful.

I think the whole area is bad. Amen.

Your directions for Option 2 and Option 3 are a bit confusing, because Illinois and Pennsylvania streets are parallel to Meridian Street, unless you're trying to point out to us the location of Meridian Street. No worries there--anyone who knows anything about Indy will be familiar with Meridian; it's the primary north-south artery in the city.

Either way, that area is "transitional"--generally getting better, but still somewhat rough. West of Meridian is probably not a good option, while just a few blocks east is significantly better. It really does vary block by block, so try to do more research on the particular buildings you're considering.
