Hi, I'm an international student at IUPUI and I have never lived in a place where it snowed before, so I want to prepare myself for this upcoming winter and start buying clothes, what are the typical stores in which I can find such kinds of clothing?

You can start with your standard big box retailers, Target, Kohl's, Sears, etc. It may be a little early yet in the year, I am not sure if they have a selection of winter gear out right now or not. The North Face has a store in the Fashion Mall, they sell a lot of climate appropriate clothes year round. You'll want to get, at the very least, gloves and a probably a hat. Some people wear scarves, I don't personally but they can be handy.

Advise for a 1st time winter person. Dress in layers. It takes a few winters to get used to the cold but the best way to stay warm is to layer your clothes. Undershirt, shirt, sweater, coat. If you are warm you can take a layer off.

You can find a decent priced coat at Kohl's, Target, or Walmart. I always wear on undershirt (t-shirt) a hoodie or sweater, and a jacket. You will want a decent pair of gloves, something with Thinsulate or wool would work. You also want the jacket and gloves to have wind blocking, which basically keeps the cold air from blowing through the material and striking the skin. I wear a North Face cap that I got from Dick's. Dick's has a lot of stuff as well, though it might be more pricy than Kohl's or Walmart.

It seams stores put their seaonal clothes out early then discount it about time it actually is needed. Dont panic and pay full price. Theres plenty for sale in time for need. I agree with kohls being choice number one. If you have a sams club membership you can find good winter clothes deals there too.

If you are short on money, the thrift shops especially Value World have a whole rack of coats. I got my mom in law three to choose from for less than $20. This shop has clean product and it smells fine. My husband likes to get his new polo shirts and tshirts there. His last few polo shirts were 89 cents each.

You actually have to be careful not to dress to heavily. We came to Indy with clothing for Alaskan winters and find that most poly lined jackets are fine with light gloves and a scarf to keep the neck warm. I usually just wrap the long scarf around my head when there is a cold wind. We are only able to wear our down coats for a few days each year. Never able to wear our heavy winter gloves and rarely use our heavy boots.

Good advice has been given here. Mike beat me to my usual "layers" advice. He is right. One item you might consider in your search is turtle necks. I always used them as an under garment but protecting my throat is a big concern for me. You can search for these at Sweetana's value shops.

I'll give that one a go and see what I can find. I have one more question though: what about pants? I mean you guys have given terrific advice on the upper part of the body, but I don't know if I should look also for a special type of lower body clothing. Any advice on this will be much appreciated (:
