I am originally from Michigan, and most of my extended family lives in the Detroit area. I find it sad that someone feels the need to start a thread about people emptying out of Detroit to Indianapolis. Detroit has more soul and character than Indianapolis can ever hope to have.

For the record, yes I do know some former Detroiters in the area. I also know a lot of former Ohioans, Kentuckians, southerners, and even some east coasters. Yes, there are a lot of people in Indianapolis from other places. Why we need a thread to chest bump ourselves about that is beyond me. Let's go to the Chicago forum and ask if anyone knows former Indiana residents. Bet you'll find a lot.

Toxic it used to have alot of character. Now sadly white flight and now black flight is removing the diversity/population of Detroit. Detroit always had 1 major flaw: It relied on only 1 area of the economy to keep moving and the auto industry was in the decline since the 60s.
A good example is the fact that now Indianapolis is the 2nd largest city in the midwest and detroit drops to 4th.
Also Toxic i probably wouldn't find more than a handful of Indiana people now living in Chicago cause of how expensive and cruel the taxes are.

The thing is, in Illinois, those higher taxes pay for things like upkeep and transit. You ever go to Chicago in the winter? There is a reason their streets are actually cleaned, it because they can afford it. This whole idea that Indiana is superior because taxes are low is a lowest common denominator type of argument that appeals to the masses. There is a reason our infrastructure is awful. There is a reason most roads in Indianapolis don't get plowed if there are less than 6 inches of snow. There is a reason that IndyGo is terrible. There is a reason Franklin Township has no bus service. There is a reason Washington Street floods anytime time we get a rainstorm. There is as reason the city had to sell off the water company just to launch the Repave, I mean Rebuild, Indy program.

Of course, it is a gross over simplification of complex problems. However, there is no denying the fact that when we the people of Indiana have to choose between an extra 1% tax to pay for snow removal and street projects; or not paying that and letting things go unfunded; most hoosiers prefer to keep their money and deal with not getting a fancy new paved road.

The fact that Indianapolis is more populated than Detroit proves nothing. Indianapolis is a much larger land area and accounts for half of the metro. Detroit only accounts 15% or so of the Detroit area. Metro Detroit is still much larger than metro Indianapolis. Yes, metro Detroit lost population in the last census. So did the city of Indianapolis in the 1980 census. Proves nothing. BTW, Corktown has more character than anything in Indianapolis to this day.

Go to the Chicago forum and ask how many former Indianans are present. I dare you. I double dog dare you.

That makes sense, point to a once in a quarter century blizzard to make a point.

Meow What did I miss? I am originally from Detroit and not sure why the hostility. I relocated to the South Bend area and was curious myself if there was anyone from Detroit was in my area. I think its a natural curiosity.

Actually, I find it very much of interest from a demographical standpoint. Specifically, what makes Detroit people move to Indianapolis in particular? People have been leaving Detroit in droves for decades now...and I know Chicago and Indy are major destinations, though I know ex-Detroiters (sorry if that is not the correct term) move all across the country. I think knowing what is making people leave Detroit in the first place is the first step in fixing the initial problem. But that issue belongs in the Detroit thread.
