Hello all!

As the subject says, I am a single woman in her 20s who will be moving to Indianapolis and living alone. I'm unfamiliar with the city's neighborhoods, and I wanted to ask which are the best areas for women living alone. Safety is my first priority, but I'm also interested in living in an area that has a lot to do. I will be working downtown so I'd like to be relatively close to that area. But that doesn't necessarily mean living downtown.

I've heard Broad Ripple and Southport are nice areas. Is that true? How is Mass Ave?

EDIT: If you have any suggestions for specific apartments, too, that would be very much appreciated. I can go up to $750 a month, but I'd like to stay in the $550 - $650 range. One bedroom, one bath.

Thanks in advance!

Well Mass Ave is downtown. Southport is nice but if you are looking for something different every night, it's probably not going to be your top choice. Broad Ripple is ok but you have to keep your wits about you. For your price range, North end of downtown would definitely fit your budget. Mass Ave can get expensive and the canal is expensive but you may be able to find something in that price range. Try apartments.com to get a feel for the pricing for apartments in the various areas.

I'd say that in that price range Broad Ripple and Greenwood would be optimal. Southport is a great place to raise a family but there's not a lot to do and certainly no night life. Depending upon your lifestyle/preferences, Fountain Square might be good too...
