I am planning out our east-west road trip this summer and Indianapolis seems to be our second night stop. We like to stay at a hotel that is in the middle of shops and restaurants and pleasant and safe to walk around at night. Where would that be? Is there a section of town that is known for this sort of thing?

1. Downtown. Lots of restaurants, museums and sporting venues but not a whole lot of shopping.

2. Keystone at the Crossing or Ironworks. Probably the best area because of safety and easy eating and shopping. You would be next to the high end shopping mall which has inside, outside and across the street lots of choices. Even a nice art theater. As I write this, I would choose this area for a one night stay. There are 3-4 hotels there. Ironworks is across the hiway but it does have an underpass.

3. Carmel downtown

4. Courtyard by Marriott Fishers Nice little area of restaurants and new hotel right off interstate

I would avoid downtown Indianapolis late at night--past about 11 PM.

In Central Indy, the place to go is Mass Ave followed by Fountain Square Fountain Square. If you want to be out downtown after 11, your best bet is somewhere along Mass Ave. Bottleworks Hotel is right along the avenue. Lots of hotels in the core of downtown, but the Wholesale District isn't as fun at night as it used to be. Maybe I've aged out of the nightclub scene. When my wife and I go out for the evening, we go to Mass Ave. Chatterbox is nice, we can sit outside the club on the patio and listen to the music.

There's shopping along Mass Ave as well. It isn't the Mag Mile or anything, but there are some good shops for sure.

Ironworks came up on my list of hotels before this post. So is it a bright, walkable area with restaurants etc? We won't be out after 11pm for sure!

Ironworks is a bit pricey. How's Hyatt House at 130 South Pennsylvania Street location wise?

Hyatt House: Excellent location. Georgia Street is very pleasant walkway one block to Meridian Street. I suggest a walk around the circle (three blocks). Not so much for shopping but lots of restaurants/bars.
