Hello,

Please all the politically correct people keep your comments to yourself. I want to know the truth about moving from Chicago to Indy with biracial children.

First let me start by telling you where we are coming from. We live near O'Hare airport just on the outskirts of Park Ridge, IL the rich suburb where Hillary Clinton grew up.

We are in the $70,000 income range which isn't much in Chicago especially since health insurance is about $600 a month for us. Not ranting just stating the facts.

We currently rent a crappy house for $1,400 a month and we were thinking of buying in Chicago but would rather stretch our dollar and live in a much larger home for less money. We have family in Indianapolis but don't really care for their neighborhood. We would definitely rent first to see if we are going to stay. Would love to live in Newport Beach California but will have to wait until our business grows to afford that location so we are considering Brownsburg. Others have recommended Carmel but I saw a few concerns about racial divide there, plus the fact that Brownsburg president is black, or at least that's what I saw on the website, it makes me think they are progressive when it comes to race.

We live in one of the best school districts in the state so we are not hood minorities looking to move from Chiraq.

Our son's current elementary school is rated a 9 so we are looking for a comparable school.
I see the schools in Brownsburg are top rated, some of the surrounding suburbs, not so much.
I also see that most of the top rated schools are 95% white, which is fine since our current school is about the same ratio in terms of race. I just want to be sure that he will not be treated differently since Brownsburg seems to be more of a rural area than what we are used to.

I know there is racism everywhere, and there are also people who love to stir the pot and play the race card. My husband and I always disagree on the subject but I would like honest answers before considering such a move. It is a big step to make especially with children.

Please don't leave your opinions about racism, yada, yada, yada, I just want honest answers from people who may have lived in the area and their personal experiences. No trolls please.

It saddens me that Chicago is known as Chiraq now ...

Wasn't Brownsburg known as a "sundown town"? I don't know if that's an antiquated term now.

Coming from Park Ridge ... it will be tough to not want to gravitate toward Carmel, to be honest, for the school system. I'm not sure what this racial divide is that you are referring to for Carmel. It's a pretty diverse place, but not economically.

What neighborhood were you turned off by?

Brownsburg has a president? First town I ever heard of that has a president.

First time for everything, I reckon.

I'm guessing she meant town council president.

I would go with Carmel. I've never heard of any racial divide there other than certain problems with the police, most of which has been in the past. Honestly, I would suspect that Brownsburg would have more racial issues, but I'm only saying that because it's a rural area.

Last time I was in Brownsburg, there was no sign at the entrance that said "middle class and above Caucasians only."

Never said there was. All I'm saying is that traditionally, smaller towns are less inclusive/diverse than larger metropolitan areas. I also understand that Brownsburg is part of the metro area, but it's not exactly a suburb. Of course, there are always exceptions to rules and Brownsburg could certainly be one of them.

I lived in Avon and my children attended Avon schools. According to them, there were numerous "people of color" in their schools who were treated no differently than the Anglo/Caucasian kids. For that matter, one of my children attending high school there confided in me that, "The black kids are whiter than I am!" relative to their behavior and mannerisms. This was interesting to them because they had attended another school with a very racially mixed enrollment where the cultural differences were apparently more pronounced.

As for acceptance in the community, I never saw any indication there was a racial or cultural divide. I did see, however, that moving out into the more rural areas to the west that this was an issue. I have ideas as to why, but this is not a subject germane to this thread.

I wouldn't worry about it. I believe it's a non-issue.

I was speaking about Carmel based on another forums comments. I was wondering if it is true, i also understand some people are just easily offended. I appreciate the Honest answers from people. Although there was a troll on here, the answers were quite helpful. Still surprised how people deny there are racial tensions in this country and no i did not vote for the current President so please do not stereotype me.

Thank You
