Hello everyone,

I'll be moving to Indianapolis this July for a job with Methodist Hospital. I am from Ohio and not very familiar with the area. I am hoping to find an apartment in a decently safe area that isn't overpriced or really far away from the hospital. I also need a place that is ok with pets (I have a Brittany). I would prefer that the commute be within a 30 minute drive. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Look into the apartments downtown indy. As long as they are near downtown area you should be able to walk or bike to work. Call the hospitals human resources department and ask for recomendations. I bet they know all the good apartment buildings that others who work there live at.

Price range, interests, age, etc. would all be helpful to give you better suggestions.

You could live practically anywhere in Indianapolis and be within a 30-minute commute.

Reverie Estates is a great management company. They restore old apartment complexes that need some love, and do a great job of it. Major benefit for a city that was falling apart 20-30 years ago. The offices are at 16th and Pennsylvania, which is a great area to live in (close to the action without being in the middle of it, not too ghetto, not at all suburban, easy commute anywhere, perfectly safe unless you're out looking for trouble. A lot of Indy looks sketch at first glance, but a few major crime areas excepted, it's basically safe.)

I think Reverie has studios for as cheap as $450/month, which is insane for being that close to downtown. (I pay $550/month to live in Irvington in an apartment that would cost me twice that much in every other city I've lived in.) A lot of people automatically assume that living close to downtown will be pricey. It's actually pretty cheap. The suburbs are the expensive parts of Indy. Thank white flight back in the '70s for that.....

16th & Penn is a hip area without being pretentious. Plenty of young people around there. Irvington is also cool, but it starts to get a little family-friendly. And it's surrounded by the white ghetto. Very Jerry Springer. But I like it there well enough. Really depends on who you are.

Avoid anything on 38th St.

Main Street on the Monon apartments in Carmel are pretty good. I lived there for a year and didn't have any problems. I was only paying 689 for a one bedroom. This is assuming you would be cool with living in Carmel, which is an upscale suburb.

We just moved here as well. We chose apartments off 96th st in the Nora area. It's about 20 minutes from Methodist, very quiet, safe and close to 465. We also have a Brittany and love living near the Monon Trail, perfect place to take your dog for a stroll. I would definitely recommend this area. we looked at many apartments around here and they were mostly dog friendly.
You really can basically live anywhere in Indy and have a short commute. Traffic really isn't bad here at all, I came from a small town of 60000 and traffic was way worse there
Best of luck!

Castleton or Fishers would probably be best in terms of safety; otherwise I don't have too much other expertise information to give you.

How big a place you getting for 550 in Irvington? Is it a complex or split up house?

Perhaps thinking of moving back to Indy at some point and had a few questions, I guess asking here is better than starting a new thread.

I had visited a buddy of mine a few times over the years in various places around Indy.
He had lived in apartments on the East side over by Washington square and also on the West Side , but now has a house in Greenwood.

Back then, esp on the East side apartment, I felt very sketched out by some of the people that lived in his complex. Like surly plumber types . It was almost like if anyone made eye contract, there was gonna be some trouble. The place seemed pretty nice, and did not look ghetto at all. It just seemed like whoever was renting those places didn't care who they were putting in there.

I know you can bypass a good bit of this by picking a descent area and picking a certain price point. I guess now with the internet, its easier to find out which agencies are slum lord types, etc. However, nothing is worse than that feeling of dread you get when that new ghetto neighbor moves in ! lol
Just wondering if Indy management companies in general were more selective these days.

I'm the kind of guy that likes the apartment in a house type situation and not really a huge apartment complex. I'm currently in a complex, but its more like a small compound of connected and unconnected townhouse types. Basically no one living above or below you. So you get the security of having a lot of people around, but not so much you ever hear them.

Irvington does sound cool. I dont mind that its surrounded by white ghetto, as long as white ghetto keeps to itself.
So most of the eastside is ghetto now? I even heard Cumberland has gang problems. is this true?

The east side has pockets of nice and pockets of not nice. Which..........does not make it unlike any other area of the city. The east side has real problems, and a lot more perception problems.
