I'm hoping to leave Florida next spring and am considering moving back to Indiana. I lived and worked in the South Bend/Mishawaka area for 15 years until 2000. Am considering the northern suburbs of Indy which research shows are the safest areas.

I won't have to worry about a commute as I won't be working, and I don't need a big house since it will be just me and a couple of cats that I'll adopt when I get there. I want to be near good medical facilities, somewhat near the stores I like to shop in (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Meijer for a general supermarket), a gym with a pool, and maybe an animal shelter where I would volunteer.

I'd be renting for the first year, either in senior housing or renting a small house. Then if I can still stand the climate at my age, I might buy a house. I only need a small house with a couple of bedrooms and I'd like a large kitchen. Most importantly, I want a yard big enough to have a vegetable and flower garden. At least one-quarter acre would do. I like a small town feel to an area, but close to amenities.

If you have any recommendations on areas for a senior to rent or eventually buy, please let me know. From research online, Carmel seems best for senior rental apartments. Noblesville seems best for rental houses. I've shopped the real estate online and have found decent houses in several of the suburbs. Fishers has a Del Webb community with decent houses, except that it seems a bit far distant from amenities, and there are only small yards.

If anyone has any suggestions on housing for a senior, I'd appreciate your input. I may be visiting soon. If you know of any "must see" things in the area, please let me know.

Thanks!

My girlfriend's parents live in the Del Webb community in Fishers. It is extremely nice - if I were of retirement age and had the money, I would live there in a heartbeat.

Most of Fishers is going to be closer to Whole Foods (small store in Carmel in Clay Terrace and larger one in Indy on 86th st.) than Noblesville. Noblesville will have larger yards probably. I would also look into Pendleton.

I'd say Carmel sounds like it fits your bill the best. You might take a look at the areas west of Range Line Road to Guilford or US 31 between 106th St and Main Street. Some smaller rental homes may be found there in mature neighborhoods with excellent access to Carmel's walkable downtown, the Monon Trail. I think there are some senior-oriented apartments in those areas or just beyond. All sorts of things in Carmel - entertainment, food, recreation (the Monon Center for indoor stuff in winter) and access to all those stores via Keystone Parkway or within Carmel (a Meijer is on Old Meridian or Pennsylvania I think north of Carmel Drive).

To me, Fishers is a different feel than Carmel. Very good things happening in Fishers but heavy traffic in areas around 96th St to 116th St around I-69 and west to Allisonville Rd. Fishers was just rated Best Place to Live by Money magazine I believe. Both have their good points and you should check it out as well. Noblesville has a cool little downtown with a town square and many events in the spring, summer and fall. You might find lower home rentals and prices in Noblesville than Carmel or Fishers.

Regarding Pendleton - its a quaint Midwest small town, but caution as you would have drive into Anderson or Indianapolis/Fishers to access some of those stores you named. Definitely lower rents and purchase prices but not the access to the amenities found in Carmel, Fishers and Noblesville.

There are very safe neighborhoods with big yards in Nora. Walking distance to Whole Foods. Consider Indianapolis itself as an option.

There is a humane society in Noblesville. It's just outside of the downtown area.

North Indianapolis in the area of 86th street has everything you're looking for: St Vincent Hospital, Trader Joe's. Senior Living. Many rental options. Humane Society Carmel, near Meridian also has everything you're looking for.

I'm here in the Indianapolis area now checking out the area. So far, I'm somewhat overwhelmed. Every city runs together so it's hard to tell what which one you're in when your driving around. I checked out the Del Webb community on Sunday, and it is nice. However, the yards are very tiny and I've heard of problems with the builder. Much more to investigate in the next few days.

Yes, unless you are familiar with boundary lines, you could easily run from parts of the north side of Indianapolis all the way to Noblesville city limits, going all the way through Fishers, and feeling like you're in one contiguous area. There is sprawl well into Noblesville now trending out toward southwest Madison County.
