Thanks for the ride share information.

I've been researching elementary schools around the southern part of Indy. Per greatschool.org, everything in that area is absolutely terrible. It's not until you get to the Southport area does the school ranking improve. Are the schools in the southern part of Indy really that bad? Are the charter schools any better? Any suggestions on how to deal with schools if I still want to live in Fountain Square area?

Information on IPS magnet or "choice programs" was provided already in this thread. If you plan to move into the IPS district, understanding the difference between choice programs and neighborhood schools is important. The majority of choice schools are downtown or north of downtown, and the choice school you get priority for is based on your address. For example, Center for Inquiry is one of the choice programs of which there are four schools. School 2 downtown is the default school based on a Fountain Square address, however, CFI 70 is open to anyone in the IPS district.

There are only a couple of ways to deal with the bad school issue, but they will both cost time and money. The first is obviously private schools. So you might be paying high property taxes for schools you can't/won't use, plus large tuition for private schools. Plus, depending on where the school is, you might have to get your kids to the school. Second is that some public school districts in Indiana allow kids who don't live in the district to attend. I don't know what the current rules are, as they were changing all the time due to school funding issues and such. You might have to pay more for your kid to attend a school in a different district, and you'll likely have to also drive them there.

If I were you, driving to Columbus daily or taking the ride share. I'd look for places in Greenwood/Johnson County near I-65. I wouldn't want to deal with the school issues in Marion County/IPS. The schools in the townships of Perry and Franklin (the city/town of Franklin is in Johnson County, Franklin Township is in the far SE corner of Marion County/Indy) aren't bad either. I'm not sure what folks mean by walk-able anyway. Our suburbs have grown enough that many of them offer housing, of various stock depending on location, where one can walk to parks, schools, malls, movie theaters, grocery stores, etc.. Most of the more developed suburbs have even went through older neighborhoods (or at least the main roads that those additions are off of) and redid utilities and added sidewalks.

Center for Inquiry schools, and maybe some other charter schools, have already been discussed here. That being said, just remember that you are dealing with entities that can change the rules at anytime. I'd read this article about some of the racial disparities among some of the better charter schools: https://www.indystar.com/story/news/...lthy/86439908/
